Like the rest of the country, we here on the edge of dartmoor have had a pretty bloody awful time trying to get out to our yards to feed our horses/ponies, and i have to say that the gritters a local council have worked very hard in keeping the supplies of salt (yellow boxes on the side of the road?) filled up , UNTIL the men in vans come along, and systemcaticaly fill up bags and buckets with aforesaid salt and grit , going from road to road, village to village....are they selling it I wonder? Probably . I t hink its really despicable, there were 4 men helping themselves outside our house the other night, leaving us al with nothing, normally i would have said something, but frankly was too exhausted to get into an arguement or worse. There have been some really heart warming tales of people helping each other, this I am afraid, is definatley not one of them

That is SO BAD !
We dont have such a thing as grit boxes in hampshire, everybody has to buy their own grit anyway. There has been none for sale in our area since before xmas!
I wouldnt have said anything either, as prob not very nice people - to say the least. Take their registration number and report them to the police next time! Do more good xx

The council whipped all the grit bins back weeks ago, we could all fall over and crack our skulls open for all they care. However a bunch of blokes going around filling bags with the stuff has the smell of entrepeneurial spirit, or more bluntly downright thievery. I'd be inclined to call the police rather than confront them though.

thats very, very rude. Our grit bin at the top of out street has been emptied every time it has been topped up by the selfish so and so's who use masses and masses of the stuff on there own drives. Now i know how hard it is to get your car off your drive in the snow, but they have literally taken all the streets supply just so they can get there own cars off. i caught someone at the top of the street the other day doing it, and aksed them what it was for. when they said there drive, which was already clear I pointed out that the grit is meant for public footpaths, not driveways and if they were worried about getting there car off they should park it on the road until the bad weather has gone.
the worst thing is how much they take, is an inch thick in some places. and yesterday when there drives had all frozen up again it was impossible to walk accross, as all the grit had washed away in the rain and caused sheet black ice. and some numpty washed there car with a hose pipe the day before yesterday. and wondered why they nearly broke there neck in the morning. numptys.

The Foundry at the bottom of our road came up with the forklift truck and took our grit bin last winter! It was replaced in November, but at the top of the hill, where nobody lives (it is a no through road) and where no one can get to because it is so icy! Oh, and someone's been and emptied it in the middle of the night
