Please, please stop using text speak folks! We don't actually allow it, apart from the junior area, but it just seems to be everywhere at the moment and it drives me insane! Please could you all type your posts in full - if only for the benefit of those of us who are not only over the hill, but halfway down the other side!!!!! It can be quite difficult to understand if you're not familiar with it, and I appreciate some people are posting from mobiles, but we do need you to type things out in full. Please? OK moan over, I'll get back in my box now!

I second that Milliesmum, plus the use of full stops and capital letters.

Correct spelling and grammar would also help let alone text speak. I find some posts impossible to understand and I think some are even subject to incorrect interpretation because of the "stream of conciousness" style. Maybe I'm just old fashioned!

MM, I totally agree - not only textspeak, but general bad spelling and non-existant grammar. Maybe I'm just too ancient!

Lets take baby steps first, get rid of the text speak first then we can work on the rest at a later date,

I'm another rooting for correct spelling, grammar and punctuation! And for the reason that that is what makes posts understandable, not just being po-faced about it. I'm with handcanter, some are just totally impossible to understand. Just read one elsewhere and I have no idea what their point is!

....and if I see one more "could of" instead of "could have" I am going to SCREAM VERY LOUDLY!! Seriously though, it's no wonder employers are complaining that they can't get decent staff.

now now people! I am probably one for forgetting good grammar and missing out punctuation, but, some people are not aware of it and some actually dont know anything about grammar and punctuation! I would much rather have a reply to something i need to know, grammar and punctuation poor, then have no response at all!!! Im sure you are all not perfect all the time!!
I have to agree with the text speak though, it's rather irritating!

I sometimes do it without thinking about it!
I was pming a member and finished with - "will speak to you tom" meaning tommorrow.
She replied back that I had got confused and that her name wasnt TOM. We had a good laugh about it, but it does show how bad habits slip in..........
woops!

PT22 - not having a go, but it doesn't really help if you can't understand the reply does it? I don't think they teach/expect as much now in school as us old ones had to deal with, I'm not blaming anyone - and some people are dyslexic of course - it's just a matter of understandability.

I once went for a nosey around the younger members forum and couldn't understand a word of it! but thats my fault for being nosey in the first place. But, as long as a post is understandable, I don't mind bad spelling or missing punctuation. It's a chat board, not an english exam and people shouldn't be made to feel inferior or that they shouldn't post because they can't spell or punctuate very well. I'm guilty of writing long posts sometimes, and try to break them up into smaller paragraphs to make it easier for people to read.
Like this! I find it a lot harder to read a whole page of a reply, even though I may be interested in it, than something broken into smaller chunks. I think as long as you know what they mean, it shouldn't matter how things are wrote down, and we wouldn't chat at a show in full queens english, so it shouldn't really matter on here, as long as it is understandable! And I did english at A level, so should know better, so if I can't always type as correctly as I should then what hope do others have!

It is the posts without full stops that I hate. I usually give up reading them half way through as I have totally lost what the poster is trying to say.

Spelling isn't a problem for me, I can usually work out what people mean. It's the 'y' for yes, 'ya' instead of you etc. that drives me to distraction. Apart from turning a simple sentence into a line of gobbledegook, it's downright lazy!

yes i understand if it is impossible to read a post, because of the grammar/punctuation being so poor. But some people really cant help it!

My texts are always REALLY long as I have to spell and punctuate the messages correctly ... not that I have OCD or anything! I hate it when adverts and signs are spelled incorrectly and my pet hate at the moment is potato's instead of potatoes. Makes me grrrrrrr.....

I,m that old, I just RING people so I don,t have to text. I keep in touch with some old school frends (who live abroad) on facebook, and I,ve now virtually stopped using it because all that was posted was LOL, LMAO etc . I had to ask my friends teenage daughter what it meant and I still couldn,t follow, should I be on Grumpy Old Women or does anyone else think it,s infuriating?

Perhaps someone could explain what 'LOL' means and why it is used - I find it very annoying.

I actually don't mind LOL (laugh out loud), as it can often make it clear that your comment is intended in fun and not as a dig at someone, it's when the whole sentence looks like you've put your fingers on the wrong keys to type, and is completely devoid of vowels!!!

its when slang and text style words get added to the Oxford Dictionary you begin to wonder how long before those words are accepted in exams and seen as acceptable for use at work, school etc etc the english language will be lost forever!!!

im not good with spelling or puntuation, but like to come on here and have my say im sure most people understand my comments, they just dont like them judging by the -6 karmas or maybe they dont understand what im writing and thats why i have them, who cares i dont think its very nce to have a moan at people who generally have problems with spelling ect text style is completle different that is just lazy.

I find text speak really annoying. Yes, I had a nosey in the Junior section when I was a moderator and couldn't believe my eyes. Someone said, in one of the earlier posts, that no-one is being blamed for bad punctuation, spelling and grammar which is true of each individual on here, but looking at the bigger picture, the Government has a lot to answer for on this particular problem. I don't know which Government, because I can't remember when it was that the Education system started to fail, but I dread to think what this country will be like in 20 or 30 years time. In my job, www.studyvox.com, we deal with students all the time and it is very frightening to see how poorly many of these students put a written piece of work together. It really makes my blood boil that kids are leaving school and have no idea about 'good English' whether written or spoken. Sorry, rant over!!
