Go for it, watched the final at HOYS and was a real mixture of types and quality, (although I have to say one of the judges, who had a microphone for the audience, wasn,t terribly complimentary about a couple of them), was horrified for the girl riding - good classes overall though.

go ofr it if you dont enter you dont get the chance to qualify! we did it last year with our homebred hunter and their were all types there, from riding club to hoys quality. 1 thing i would advise is to get your horse used to different types of riders, ours was pulled in top and spewed it with the ride judge (he was only used to being ridden by a 7stone woman so was a bit of a shock for him when a 13st man got on!) he was swifty dropped right down the line!!!

If you go on SFAS website there is a link to piccies from last few years.
Only thing I would say IMO at qualifying rounds small hunters don't tend to be at top.

Not in the classes I have watched over the years but that just may be coincidental.
Normally good quality of animal though - judges discretion whether you qualify or not - however, don't think there has been a class where Top hasn't.

I would definitely agree with this. My cob mare was dropped out of the top 2 on 4 occasions because she didn't go for the ride judge. We qualified on the 5th attempt, after putting everyone and anyone on her (we did it over 2 years, not 5 attempts in one season BTW!) Our persistence worked - The ride that she gave the judge won her the class at HOYS. Good luck - it's well worth having a go ;D

pennypoo - my first thought was your horse looked a bit light for a hunter, but I am no expert on big horses and showing types! And like you said, can be misleading sometimes from photo.
In general, SFAS has plenty of high standard in each class and are very competitive to qualify. They seem to be getting more and more popular as well.
Does your horse jump ? As well as the Hunter and RH classes, there is also the Riding Club show horse class where type is much less important but they do need to do trotting poles and 2 jumps as well (my d**n horse took objection to one of the jumps having had really good pull in last year !).
Yes it is always the same judges who go around all the qualifiers. I would say in general the judging is very fair and thorough. And also they will give you feedback after the end of the class as well which is really useful to help your improve for next time. So you know whether to not bother with a certain class again if they just think wrong type, or what to work on if type is good but other issues maybe. They will be bluntly honest, so you need to take it as constructive and not be offended if you do ask for feedback!
And the ride the horse gives is definitely really important, so echo others advice about making sure your horse is used to lots of different riders. 101 of showing in classes with ride judge !!

I qualified my small in 2008 (I think I can't remember!) He wasn't placed at the final as he was very green and a little stressy for the ride judge. He was getting much better for the ride judge last year, until he had a nasty accident in the field last June (which he is still off work from) This is him (the day before his accident )

He is doing ok, no scars or swelling despite 2 major operations! He came 2nd in his qualifier (top 2 qualify) and he was a little stressy at the qualifier, but more babyish than anything. He is a small, but is quite an old fashioned stamp compared to some. I would have a go, try entering whichever you think he is more suited to and see how you do. You can then get the feedback after the class to see what the judges think of him. Have at the photos from last year which should give you some help on deciding which class he would be best in ( www.smrphotos.co.uk/ )
