not used to this web site, hear a lot about it some good mostly bad, not afraid to admit that have even been a topic on it. Can never understand why all the strange names appear!! Dressager, yes i did help out and fine we had a few problems as do all who are part of a team running a show. I have been a member of BD some years back with a horse that qualified for both regional and finals and over those years have witnessed far worse than Sundays event so not sure what cloud you float on but these things happen.

Dressager you might as well tell us if you were placed and why you were so unhappy with your %. You are the only one voicing your complaints. Are you so high profile nationally that you expected to win? If dressage was your sport you wouldn't come on this site. The people who ran this day are very approachable. We have passed on your comments. They apologised for the lack of stewards and said a high profile NPS person had let them down late in the morning, two others were having to care for a parent seriously injured the previous evening bringing horses in. That being the case you owe Mr Alder and his team an apology. He runs a good show.

Shall we not turn this into a row as I am interested to hear about this event, negatives and positives. dressager is entitled to his/her opinion and hopefully critisisms can be used to improve it next time. Much prefer to hear from other people who competed and how they got on. p alder, this is a very good site as free speech is allowed and encouraged and Emmi, dressage is my main thing though I enjoy showing (and eventing and SJ and any thing else horsey) and people on here compete in all disciplines.

We went, as i stated earlier, and did really enjoy the day - I did do well and won my class but i don't want people to assume this is the only reason i am saying i enjoyed the show.
This is the first time we have been to the event and decided to as my pony has had a very good winter season competing in dressage, so thought it would be worth a shot.
I do agree that the presentations were a little disorganised, maybe the finalist rosettes could have been given out as people finished their tests?, but as it stated in the schedule the presentations were for the benefit of the sponsor and spectator, i believe that this event has some fantastic sponsors and they do deserve this!
Looking at my sheet i feel my marks were very fair (finished on 70%), they are similar to marks my pony has been achieving all winter in both affiliated and unaffiliated competitions, the comments were also very accurate.
Generally i feel that this event was brilliantly run, i would like to commend the organisers and sponsors, obviously there were some little things that could have been improved but i have yet to go to a show/dressage comp/event where this is not the case.
Rosettes were beautiful, prizes were very generous and the stewards were all extremly helpful.

We had a good time although only third, but got good scores (a little lower than usual but the pony didnt go quite as well as usual so very happy). Would love to have used our music, but will be back again for another go next year.
One very positive thing about this competition is the encouragement it gives. We had done very little dressage before going to this competition last year. We enjoyed it so much that my 17 year old daughter now competes affiliated (with a different horse) at AM and as my little one was invited to help the other girls with rosettes (thank you for being so nice and letting her help), she now has taken up riding again and wants to have a go at BYRDS fledglings.
Really glad everyone liked the rosettes and that they were grand enough (I hope) for the occasion. Jolly well done to everyone who won, and especially to the Shetland that was second in the Prelim 14 as it is especially tough for shetties to compete and do well against the other breeds in dressage.
Well done NPS and Thank You So Much to the Sponsors and will be trying to quaify next Tuesday! Roll on next year...

We went and quite enjoyed it (although it's a very long way for us!) We were (literally) just out of the placings but that was because the pony (and rider?) did not go as well as they can. There is always next time! some things could be fine tuned and I am sure the organisers will take this on board. Riding pony and part bred entries were disappointingly low, but how lovely to see line ups with all the native breeds represented. This competition can only get better. My only suggestions (and I have mentioned them to the organisers) are possibly to run an under 16 competition and to further split the large breed M&M's if they continue to be such large classes. Lastly, we didn't see anyone who looked as if they were too good, or too bad to be there!!

May I suggest that those who are interested join their local BYRDS. Your local BYRDS organiser will encourage PC and showing members. Fledglings from 8 ..12 years are also well catered for. Dressage is not for the faint hearted or those who do not take criticism well. The training is based on German Scales of training...Rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness leading to collection. Sometimes the showing way of going can be criticized, showing tightness in the neck and back.(From being pulled in instead of worked from behind) Dressage requires a deeper lower outline working more over the back with suppleness and bend. The NPS and BSPS are both to be congratulated on running dressage comps. Its good that BD judges are being used , BUT the BSPS needs to use BD judges too so there is some continuity.

Lets all try to persuade BSPS to have BD tests and judges at their Champ shows. Its good to be all singing from the same hymn book on this !

It would be a first if the BSPS copied the NPS ;D There again most of the show societies copy each others competitions so it would be nothing new. Well done to the NPS Dressage Working Group for getting their competition up and running for us all to enjoy and for encouraging BD to offer affiliate membership. More of us will be able to afford to have a go at affiliated dressage as well now.

I have read this thread with interest. We went this year for the first time - we managed to qualify 4 ponies in total, 3 small M&M's and one large, we didnt take the large, just the three smaller ones. I for one had a thouroughly great day, I know nothing about dressage, and I mean nothing, and to be honest I am not about to start to learn about it. One of the girls on the show team has taken a shine to it, can learn a test in 2 mins and trains the ponies herself, She managed to qualify two ponies who were only broken at xmas - both winning there classes to qualify, before I get shot down for picking up easy tickets!!
I think its a fantastic series to encourage native ponies to do something else, the show team girls are loving doing something new, and I think the main reason the girls enjoy it - i know nothing about it, so cant comment if they have done a bad test or not, so everyone has a happy day!!
It was a fantastic day, Katie was placed quite well in the one class - cant remember which one ! and the one pony who is rather naughty managed to stand still in the line up, although did do a rather nice 'high school', movement on the trot round that got commented on!! I did notice and others did too, that one of the little m&m's appeared lame, but then heyho, we got some fab rossettes and there is always next year!!
Roll on next year, Kate wants us to take 6 ponies....looks like I might have to buy a book about dressage!!

Well dressage is only correct flat schooling, not rocket science! Great that you went and enjoyed it, hope you go back next year with the 6 ponies.

Sorry but I think that after running an event on two previous occasions the organisers should know enough to give competitors some indication of what happens in the presentations and understand that having nearly every competitor there standing around in a 60x20 is neither pleasant nor safe. The organisers wouldn't need a vast amount of dressage experience to know that it is the norm, even at the highest levels, for marks to be made public as soon as possible, for reasons of transparency if nothing else. To encourage people to attend prize givings prizes may be withheld form those who do not present themselves. I did not expect BD standard (and I do not want to get personal) but I did not expect one of the winners to be so on their forehand that I wondered whether a shovel would be required at the end of the test, for another poor pony to have to tolerate constant sawing on it's mouth, another to actually have its chin on its chest at times and one rider to be hanging out of the side door while doing wild things with her hands! These were the "Champions". A test does not have to be won on 70+ and many combinations should not have received over 60 - dressage is supposed to be a constant process of progression; telling riders that poor work is worthy of 7/8/9 is not helpful though I understand that this is the fault of the judges. I'm very surprised that many competitors were not from showing backgrounds given the number of yellow legs I observed (incidentally the BD rule book specifies white, cream or beige!) and the fact that the commentator seemed to know everyone's showing record so much so that I wondered if I'd missed a biography form in my entry pack! I am disinclined to inform my ponies' breed socs. of any achievements as many breed socs. don't have the first clue about the format of BD so any affiliated regional or national placings they may achieve pale into insignificance when showing societies run competitions with titles like "Supreme Dressage Final"!I agree with everyone who has commended the facilities, they really are first rate and were one of the draws for me to the competition in the first place. TopSpec are very good to sponsor the event but allowing their representative to experience the disorganisation first hand (presenting wrong rosettes etc.) was not a good idea. Having Laura B. there was fantastic but having one of Britain's most successful dressage rider's witness such a farce was not! Thankfully given her expertise, she picked the best from what she was presented with. Dressager, I have highlighted one paragraph in your very lengthy and at times un-neccessary speal. May I suggest that, if, as you state, the officials of some Breed Societies lack knowledge of BD, they would be delighted to learn more if you could provide them with a precis'ed version of the discipline and with the affilliated success of your animals. The second point is that you (and I quote) state "showing societies" - for the record, the NPS, which was formed in 1893, is a Breed Society (of the British Riding Pony) and not a Showing Society. It is the 'umbrella' for the British Native Pony and would, I'm sure, welcome knowledge of any 'mainstream' successes.

Good move NPS Dressage. We've been told there will be a Dressage to Music class next year that qualifiers can compete in.

Only just spotted this thread otherwise i would have commented sooner. I attended the event with my husband who videoed the freestyle final for the NPS (www.centrelinedtm.co.uk) and i agree it must have been a very long day for all involved. My background is both dressage and showing (inc PB natives!) - 'my' breed society was always interested to herar what my purebreds had been up to but seemed less intrested in the PB until he got to Olympia in the quadrille! Having competed in aff BD, I would agree that some combinations may have been fortunate to win at a National Final but others would not have looked out of place at Regional or even National BD. One can only compete with others who enter and, if youre the best on the day, you will win. At this competition percentages are largely irrelevant (there are no points to gain) although I agree, it would have been interesting to know the scores. Surely the most important factor is that those who choose to compete in this competition, either in the qualifiers or the final, are asking qualified judges to comment on their ponies way of going - this must be applauded and encouraged at whatever level they are currently achieving - they and their ponies will improve, some of them may go on to compete in BD classes - who knows but well done for having a go. If Dressager lives too far from Addington to help there next year, could he/she help their Area run a dressage teach-in? or give a demo or something? there is a need for education which is why this competition started in the first place, help spread the word!
