Has anyone any suggestions of a make of saddle to fit a high withered but not narrow TB? We've tryed a plethora of saddles on him and if they clear his withers they are pinching his shoulders, and if they're not pinching his shoulders they are sitting on his withers!! He has a front riser pad but we really want a saddle to fit him without - any ideas please?

High withered but not narropw is a diffciult fit, I think. My boy who is that shape has an Ideal WHP saddle - buit it was the best we could get and not absolutely perfect. Good luck.

What about somthing with a cut back pommel. that will allow for the withers and then can also be wide. try looking at synthectics as they have all sorts of changable gullets and fish inserts.

My Connie mare is like this and i struggled for yrs, Ideal wasn't too bad out of the bunch we tried actually, had one for nearly a year. She is now in a GFS Fieldhouse VSD so we can show as well as dressage etc, been in that for around 6 yrs now. I had the added problem of her being short coulped, unuual in her breed. Hope you find something!

I had exact same problem with a Ex Racehorse that I had, the only two saddles that ever fitted her was an Ideal Jessica (i think that is what it was called) and a Fylde Majorie. Not too much of a shame as both lovely saddles particularly for showing!

I know you want to show but fit is so important even if the saddle is slightly the wrong fit it can affects the horses way of going and that will not look good in the show ring. have a look at bates as they do all the same systems as the synthetics, or go for made to measure. make sure you get a saddle fitter or a knowlagable friend to have a look. good luck.

This was exactly the problem I had with my horse, high withered with a flatter broader back, he was fitted by a saddler with an Ideal working hunter (now for sale on here with paddy123) he started bucking as it was not really a great fit, have now had a bespoke saddle made to fit both him and my daughter, the difference is amazing, It was measured for by a local saddler (not the origional one) who took about 7 different measurments and made a template it was then made by "Hastilows" they are in surrey I think.

They were both narrow/medium. I now have a 17hh ex racehorse who I show as a hunter and he has a flat back and a wither and I ride him in a medium Flyde Marjorie. I have just found that the Fyldes fit everything never had a problem with a Fylde whether on a pony or my horse. Own opinion not saying everyone has same experience.

If you shop around , you may be able to have one made to measure for not much more than an off the peg one. If the horse is not likely to change shape too much in the future, it woiuld be worth looking into.

Would recommend a M2M and can highly recommend someone - I've just had one done for my cob - M2M him and also M2M me with extra deep seat and knee blocks (for dressage) and have to tell you it looks fantastic, quality is great and fits both him and I perfectly ..... more importantly it actually cost a lot less than you would think I had all the above extras included and saddle delivered to me for £830 - and the price does not reflect the quality of this saddle and it is being admired by all who see it

have a look at Solution Saddles which are treeless - when yuo are sitting on them no one would know they are treeless as they look exactly like ordinary show saddles. they reckon they can fit anything and more importantly, comfortably for your horse. we got one for our highland, but it also fits our dartie, our connie and our Belgian Warmblood. they just have different pads under them. they are expensive, but they do HP which helps. or think you can rent them to make sure you are OK with it before committing to buy. anyway, their website is very informative and well worth a look if you have an open mind.

Fylde do what is called a 'thoroughbred panel' on their marjorie saddles.
I too have a TB who is very awkward, she has a wither but its extremely wide which makes getting a saddle that isn't going to pinch hard. Phoned Peter up and asked him what to do and he mentioned this special panel they can put in. Unfortunately they can't put one on an exsisting saddle as they have to make it with the panel on. Its a fairly new thing they are doing I think?
They also can't do this panel on the Samanthas as they are a different shape to the Marjories.

I had problems finding a saddle for my pony, had one made to measure only to find it didnt fit! as it was not made at the place they took the mesurement, so the saddle maker had not even seen my pony. So then i had Houghtons of Darwen out and he made it from scratch brought loads of different trees out fitted that then built the saddle up from there. The saddle fits perfectly and he was was still cheaper than Jefferies and Black country.
