Jenna make a list of questions to ask the potentials to weed out the timewasters. Use the unfortunate experiences you have had to guide you for the future. What could you have asked/checked out beforehand to avoid what had happened?
I always think you should ask at the end of their interview (because you should be interviewing on the phone). Well that all sounds lovely Mrs Potential Buyer, I think it may be worthwhile meeting. May I ask, if you should like my pony and I think you are the right home, would there be any reason why you could not proceed with the purchase? There is nothing worse than someone saying they love your pony, but need to sell their own or find a livery yard etc. etc.
I think you can be polite but quite firm with your questioning.

Yes weeding out!
When I was looking for my last pony, I had my questions and I would always say at the end of the conversation "is there anything you want to ask me?". Most said no, whilst others struggled to find a question they thought they should ask. An awful lot would say "just come and have a look" which was sayinng "Come waste my time and yours". As I wasn't keen to go anywhere just to have a ride, I wanted, loads of information, pictures etc. Basically I wanted to know everything so that I went with deposit in back pocket desperate to buy because it met all my criteria.
This is a two way process, you know what home/rider your pony would suit and you need to write all your information and questions down, just as if you were arranging a marriage for your daughter. I would be delighted if a seller did this, it would make me keen to buy knowing the seller was making sure the home is the right one.
If you are really keen to sell, or have to sell, then you probably just want to get people through the door, so this process will not achieve that. However, under those circumstances, you must accept you will get some people just looking.

I would like to make a public apology on here for a member Merrythorpe who has a fabulous pony for sale. I have, obviously very unwisely, been trying to help an aquaintance find a pony for loan ( sorry should have read loan not sale) I have gone to a lot of trouble, Merrythorpe has gone to a lot of trouble sending photographs etc, turning away other people, re-arranging her week-end, and lo and behold receives a text just before they were due to go saying they had 'changed their mind' I am absolutely furious, embarassed and willnot be doing this again. I would never wittingly be a time waster, apart from anything else, its just d**n rude. I am really very very sorry.

Ladybird I think you have been let down just as much as the seller.
All sounds good Jenna, fingers crossed.

From Ireland asked price in first email and then wanted more info pics etc. 23 emails later after sending details of 3 ponies including prices many photos, measured them all(twice) was then told couldn't afford the 3yr old that had been placed at every county show she'd been to. I pointed out that the unshown 2yr olds were(much) cheaper but was then told that it was an extra year to wait and I should be grateful to have a genuine buyer!!! To me is a genuine buyer is one who has the money, not a photo collector. Not as if I sprung the price as an afterthought - if can't afford it say so, don't ask for hundreds more pics

Hiya kayjayem, it was a woman i spoke to and she rung me directly. I sent pictures and emails, then she said she didnt have enough money to buy them both and wanted one without the other- and still she wanted me to take them over which would have cost twise as much for what i was asking for one!! What a complete waste of time. have a Kama Kayjayem! I think we have the same person? : )

She said sorry we are on our way see you in 20mins, she then just never turned up! Now why not text or tell me on the phone she had changed her mind! So bloody annoying!

I also have had my fair share of them over the last couple of months. I have a yearling filly and a colt foal for sale both very reasonably priced and from prizewinning parents. Both will make lovely show ponies until old enough to do other things. I have had a few genuine people who are, I hope, genuinely interested in the ponies but I also have had people who have asked for loads of pictures, details of breeding, parents show wins etc etc. - they have then gone off of the radar and when I have sent them a message politely asking them to let me know if they are still interested I have had no replies whatsoever. Why don't people just say "sorry but I have changed my mind/can't afford/don't like them etc" instead of wasting your time and then being rude enough to ignore your messages.
I always give my mobile number to people interested so that they can give me a call for a chat but as yet not one person has done this - makes you wonder if it was better before the intervention of the internet!!!!!

I get some really good ones- one came for miles over the sea- with vet in tow - to vet- then said pony was an inch too small- she had known all along how big she was! others saying they can't drive the distance - but are going to show- how can they show if they can't drive all very strange- makes you wonder why you bother breeding good ponies ?? then you get the genuine ones who pay for them take them and make a really good job of them- and come back for another in years to come- so I suppose swings and roundabouts really.

If i had a pound for all of the idiotic questions i have had about my unbroken/ untoched four year old id be a millionare. Questions like has it seen busy traffic im like uhhh love its UNTOUCHED, or is it broken Stated unbroken on ad. Im sure there is only so much you can say about a baby thats not under saddle yet? But oh no some people want cream on top. So fed up have sent about 30 dvds and god knows how many emails with pics and all have waisted my time. I wouldnt mind but if they just asked once but you get the ones that say 'oh and can you send this' then the next day 'oh and now can you take photos of that'
I swear id rather keep him and save the stress of trying to find a nice home for him
The you get the ones that arrange to come then ring you back 3 hours later saying they partner thinks hes too young, or there not allowed anymore.

Think some people are so sad that they just pick an advert and ring up for a 2 hour chat, then they convince themselves that they are genuine buyers so they are completly justified in asking for DVDs, measurements, ice cream and jelly wotever!

Oh Ladybird you are so sweet, I was cross with her but you wrote me such a nice email it made me remember there are nice horsey people out there. Unfortunately she wasnt the only one: I had the wannabees telling me all their ponies life stories, sad death stories and guess what?, once they have bored the pants off you you never hear from them again.(am I am a consellor?)
I ve had the 'I can offer a really nice home but dont have any money can I pay installments?, which I agreed to then never botherd to reply after a ridicilous numer of emails. ( am I the Provident loan company?)
Following numerouse requests for photos of ponies/daschund in every conceivable position, the lorry from every angle, I have had responses which are along the lines of I would love your pony/horse box/daschund puppies I can only afford £? about a third of the advertised price '(am I Tesco's)
The house in Devon goes on the market this week, Im dreading the farmer wannabees with maisonette budgets.

[/quote tThis made me smile we have had some land for sale recently, and we we Had 6 viewings within the first morning of going on the market, the funniest one though , were a couple who turned up at the gate in matching clothes, asked nothing about the planning or build, but proceeded to sniff the stables and around the muck heap....arh yes said the man real countryside, i can see sheep , pigs etc , his wife who had a dreamy look on face nodding. i asked if they used to watch the good life........yearh they both replied we loved that programme.......say know more tom and Barbra LOL

Yes - we've had the same problem - we had 2 gorgeous, well bred mares for sale, as circumstances have forced our downsizing - we were beaten down on the price but shook hands on the deal and never saw the people again!! Having said that we have now sold them to a cracking home. They are loved to death.......but why do people do it!!!!!!!!!
