Can anyone advise how many days from last covering day you can do a blood test for pregnancy. It used to be 90 days a few years back. I know you can do internals but I think my mare had enough scans etc when at stud. Any advice please.

I rang our vets to find out and they told me 1st October for a mare covered last week of June. I'm not going to bother, she did'nt return so I'm hoping now she is in foal, it would have been too late in July if she had returned and October is a non starter. I decided not to bother with a scan either, she was'nt scanned last time either as the small stud she goes to does'nt offer that facility. I've had a couple of signs already from this predictable mare that all is as hoped.

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure about mine. Neither have had foals before. They were also covered at the end of June. Will post a notice when done.

I personally would scan, the blood tests are not always correct whereas a scan can tell you in a couple of minutes. Most of the mares do not object to scanning. We have only had one mare who hates scanning out of many mares over the years, however she also hates needles as well!!!!!
However it is of course matter of preference ive not ever blood tested but I do believe 90 days sounds about right for a result.

Scanning is the best policy as i am sure anotherdeal will agree after her traumatic experience with twins. A very experienced vet can scan from 11 days onwards but i always wait untill day 16, if of course i have not already seen the mare in season. The good thing about day 16 is if the mare is not in foal the scan helps to give you an idea when the next folicle will be ready.
