I have 3 mares in foal for next year and instead of feeding a ready made stud mix i'd like to mix up my own hopefully managing to save a few pennies, I have a 13.2hh British riding pony, a 15.2hh tbx and a 13.2hh native type coloured mare. What should I be buying I know when I worked at the stud they had oats, locust bean, soya and maize but can't remember if there was any other. Many thanks x

I always feed my broodmares for the last three months and foals luzerne/alfalfa in the form of nuts which I soak. I know Dengie do these in 20kg bags which is cheaper than Alfa-A. Our ground has a tendency to be a bit acid, so Luzerne gives them the extra calcium they need and about 16% protein like stud mix. I also give them a little bit of stud cubes or mix to make it more palatable if they resist the bland taste at first. I give cereals like maize a wide berth because they are high in energy and low in protein and calcium. Soya has 48% protein so I would feed that carefully. Some mins and vits can also be added.
