Hi, I have recently bought a sec b foal who was weaned at 4 months, I thought this was a little early but was told that they always wean at 4 months, and wondered what you would recommend to feed him he looks ok bodily wise and I want to keep him looking this way, I had planned to feed a stud mix and alfa, but any suggestions grateful.

Hi D and H do something called Suregrow which is brilliant we use it on all our foals at weaning and it's brilliant it's got all the mins and vits that a foal would need we also mix in molli or alfa and some times D and H mare and youngstock mix ... We mainly breed TB sport horses but have also weaned natives on this to ... Would be interested to hear other peoples advice, you never stop learning

We personally wean the natives onto a normal D & H Stud cube which our mares are on, I have recently moved onto Alpha Oil for some of the horses which I am thrilled with so will use that for the weanlings. I am always a little wary with the joints of the natives on balancer type food as some are a little too rich for them as they are normally very good doers they just need good hay or haylage and a little food. Ours all have a mineral block so they can take what they need.

I wean mine onto Top Spec balancer and sugarbeet, and if necessary to maintain condition an oil product - no stud cubes or mixes as I prefer to avoid starch and sugars (ie cereals and molasses) for natives. I've found that weanlings don't much like the taste of alfalfa or they would get alfa oil, love it, and give it to them when/if I can get them to eat it! Top Spec breed natives themselves holiday and their helpline is terrific. I've never had any joint problems whatsoever while feeding a suitable one in the correct quantities to natives, I'd rather make sure they had all necessary micronutrients like any other pony.

I feed my Connemara mares and foals soaked Alfalfa pellets, I know Dengie do them. It contains about 16-18% protein and lots of natural calcium, which is more readily absorbed than the limestone flour in compound feeds. i found that once I have mixed a few stud cubes in as well, the weaned foals wont touch any feed without their soaked Alfalfa.
