My mare was scanned in foal earlier in the year and has previously had 2 foals no problem. She 'escaped' from her stable this morning and went straight over to the geldings and showed to them, including winking and peeing...that's not good is it??? I'm going to get her scanned again, but just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same with good results??

That's encouraging to hear, thanks lisa. They are usually out at this time of year so no where near the geldings, but my other mares foal is on box rest so I had to bring them both in. She has been AI'd before and this is the first year I had her covered naturally so I'm not sure how she may react. Thanks for your reply :-)

Let us know the outcome. I was secretly hoping that Violet was still in foal, but just found her winking and squirting to Mini too

When i got my horse at 3 months old he came with his dam, and she winked and squirted most of the time she was at our stables and she had a cracking foal the year after, so i just think it depends on the mare, good luck x

My mare was believed in foal last year as she never came back into season ( covered in June ) then 40 days away from her due date she started winking at my gelding and proved not to be in foal,I knew anyway as she just wasnt fat enough.Scanned in foal this year but wont believe it until the foal is alive and well in front of me.Im hoping for 3rd time lucky!!!!!! Good luck

This has happened to me twice.
One mare winked and squirted all way through both pregnancies and gave birth to fine fillies. The other had absorbed at 11 weeks.
So guess it depends on horse

Maybe because she got a bit of real action she's after a bit more. lol. Fingers crossed she's all ok. My mare has been scanned in foal. Mine and her 1st time at this and I won't believe it till the foal hits the ground. Fingers crossed for me too.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Good luck to everyone who has mares in foal. My mare is still being a bit of a tart....maybe its because she is having a filly this time like stormyskies said!!!!! She has had 2 colts previously so keeping everything crossed. I'm debating at the moment whether to get her scanned or not? There is nothing I could do now til next year if she had aborted and as quite a few of you have said their mares did show whilst in foal, I'm less inclined to interfere and possibly cause damage if we did scan. Oh what to do!!! Not sure if I could cope for 6 months of not knowing!!!! xxx

you could always blood test rather than scan

What about if you manage to catch a urine sample?
I have had mares scanned not in foal and infact they are, with twins as well. I have also had mares absorb and also abort in the past. Its swings and round abouts, I cannot see it being much of a different effect on her being covered naturally rather than AI.

Thank you. I might try the wee sample first and if not, the vet is back in 6 weeks to do jabs so I could get a blood test done then. Good thinking!! Can I use a human pregnancy test on a horse? xxx

You cant use a human pregnancy scan due to different hormones.
I personally if the vet is coming out get him to scan her, its the quickest and most reliable source of result.
Some mares can show we call it "angry water" it is slightly different to them being in season as they usually swish their tails and generally look cross - it is to warn others they are in foal I believe.
Hopefully thats all it is but personally I would scan rather than anything else. I always love looking at scans when the mares are further on as you can see alsorts of bones such as ribs, skull, eye sockets and its just generally really interesting.

Thanks holiday, great advice as always. When she has been 'squirting' its more of a gush of watery liquid (like wee) than the thicker yellowy stuff. I hadn't thought of the pictures that I may see in the scan either, that would be lovely to see. I'll speak to my vet and see what she recommends. As she is coming out anyway it would be no hassle to do either. Thank you :-)

When I bought my mare in foal in Feb she'd display to the geldings and some of the mares. I was told this perfectly normal, got vet to come and scan her to make sure but he didn't need to as he could feel foal she had a stunning colt for me on 1st June

I have mares that show in season and one that even stands to be covered, she still foals to the first date get your vet to do an investigation, they can tell by feeling from around 8 weeks.

Im so sorry to hear that, can you get a free return if you inform the stallion owner straight away? Dont know if they would go on 1st Oct terms? Would doubt it would be anything to do with a natural service, just bad luck I feel. I know personally we would with our stallions and a few of the stallions ive used would also do the same, at least you know now before the start of Winter.

i know it is upsetting to know your mare is not in foal especially after a 21 day scan, but all mares are different we had a mare who would squeal and "temper show" all the way through her term. the amount of times i had her scanned just in case would have paid for a short break:)

Thanks for all your kind words. Very disheartening but many people go through alot worse. At least I know now and can start earlier next year without the worry. Going to save up the pennies now and find a gorgeous Warmblood and try and breed another dressage superstar. Here's hoping xxx
