Normally they don't 'tend' to really show until Six months so it is difficult! Another scan would tell you, or if she has been in season regularly or not! Plus bad angle for photo need to see if her belly has dropped K xxx

well I would say possibly however I have a broodmare mare who looks ready to drop and I am not covering anything or have for the foreseeable future so think with my girl a grass belly and slacker tummy muscles makes her look infoal!

Have you wormed her ?

I take slight offence to that comment Wiltshire Man, without question she has been wormed as all my ponies are and have been on a very regular cycle. She was last wormed with Eqvalan duo, and yes it was within three months of covering which I know is not advised however we were lead to believe she was empty and had not recovered so didnt think it was an issue. Just for info kzzp123 she is prob just coming up to 6 months post covering, the thing thats worrying me the most is she was covered didnt come back into season was scanned vet said she was empty and had a bit of fluid and a dormant follicle so she was jabbed, recovered and scanned again empty.....my gut feeling is she had caught the first time too

We too had made the decision this year to stop breeding for the forseeable future but this mare had been covered prior to us making that decision, Vanity is a mare that doesnt like alot of human intervention, we are due another round up at ok corral this weekend for the next worming session!!

Why don't you get her blood tested so you know for sure?

Post by nickiop on Nov 18, 2010 9:53:47 GMT
Easy answer would be to have the vet to either re scan, internal or blood test........call me tight but would rather spend that £100 on 5 round bales of hay at this time of year, rather than lining the vets pockets to find out something that at this late stage cannot be changed anyway. Feel slightly irritated anyway as already paid for x 2 scans and call outs plus other treatment to be told she was empty on both occaisions....when I now have a gut feeling that she had caught the first time too So would rather invest my money in hay and play the waiting game lol was just interested to know if like me the good people of HG shared the opinion that she could possibly be in foal. I know her covering dates so will know when she will need keeping a close eye on. xx

She looks as if she may be in foal to me too - when would she be due. Although as had been said, they are often quite far on when in foal, I have a mare whose belly drops within 2 weeks of being covered if she has taken - always had her scanned (in case of twins), but her belly has always given the game away first that she is in foal.

She would be due around end of May from the second covering. xx

Easiest thing that wont cost alot is get a home pregnancy testing kit and stand around and wait till she goes for a wee! That was the only way to know way back younder years!!

Easiest thing that wont cost alot is get a home pregnancy testing kit and stand around and wait till she goes for a wee! That was the only way to know way back younder years!! I though that it was a different chemical / hormone that worked in a human test I'd say quite probably is in foal - failing that have you lost a round bale recently ;D ;D

I don't know about that? The old lady that taught my mother everything she knows always used them.... this is going back a few years now mind, before scans etc could be done. She taught her mares to pee when she whistled and used a home testing kit, modern ones might be different! I am sure the vets could do something with a urine sample anyway!
Her belly looks as though it has dropped, unless she is an elderly mare or has problems I would say you have prob got a little one in there!
Just looked on the web, apparently they are not meant to work as the hormones are called something different but are made up of the same chemical but there is just less of it in a horse or something like that! But people swear by them and the ones that they have been tested on have worked. Apparently the ones you get at hospital or doctors are the most accurate and free so even better.... Lets hope the docs don't ask questions! :-) K xxx
