I was out hacking with a friend today, when we came accross a lady I know, riding one and leading another. The lead horse turned and legged it, when it saw us and she let go. She only had a tiny lead rope on it. We stopped and waited for her to dismount, catch the loose horse and then walked very slowly towards her, as a car was waiting for us all to pass, the narrow lane. As we approached the car, the lady yelled very rudely STOP NOW. I am trying to mount. We explained that we were trying to let the car past, but she shouted again, STOP RIGHT NOW - the car is waiting for me - not you. We dually stopped, she got on, her lead horse jumped over a brick wall while she was mounting and then the car passed and we thanked him. Off she rode. My friend and I were speechless about how rude she had been, but werent unduly worried. We hacked home, I said goodbye to my friend at her yard and carried on hacking home. I then hear the crashing of horses feet behind me. Its the same woman, screeching at me - that is she coming past. I told her not to, as it would upset my horse. She told me that she had lost the horse she was leading twice already, so needed to rush past. I told her again NO - do not come past, you will upset my horse and started to trot. She trotted behind me for a bit, until we met another horse coming towards us on this narrow lane. This other ladies horse, looked terrified at the 3 horses trotting towards her and planted his feet in the middle of the lane. There was a drive way to pull in, so I pulled my horse in, so that we could all let the other lady past.... Oh no - stupid woman behind shoots past me at a rate of knots, heading straight at this other woman facing her! My horse started leaping in the air and crashing about on the road. I yelled at her to STOP, so I could dismount, but she just hurtled forward towards this other terrified horse. By this time, my horse has lost the plot and the other horse is routed petrified. I yelled at the top of my voice "will you bloody well stop" and she finally did, saying whats your problem! I told her, she had no right to put other people in danger, just because she had no control of her horses and that she just huffed and trotted off as fast as her two horses could take her. Am I wrong to think she behaved badly? I would never pass someone, who expressly asked me not to

She sounds like a total nutter - if she expects you to stop for her, the least she could do is stop for you. Perhaps she could have asked politely if she could pass you when there is a suitable place, or even suggested you all ride along together? If we meet people out hacking, we often ride some of the way with them - if they are not mental, mind you!

It sounds like you and the other poor lady(riding alone) were lucky neither of you were hurt!!! The woman riding/leading should NEVER have been on the road if she can't control BOTH horses!!! Absolutely disgusting. Glad you are ok LP xx

Totally agree, she should not be riding and leading if she cant control the one she's leading, not only is she putting the lead horse in danger, but ALL other road users

The bloody stupid woman LP. Do you know what yard she was from? If she was from a livery yard/riding school I would be tempted to ring them and complain. We have the odd numpty riding about round us and it always makes me very cross and I worry that 1 day me and frankie will meet them out hacking.
Our local riding school are fab though, they know me and frankie and know that Ros is still a bit novicy and the few times I met them out and about in the summer they always went the opposite way round the big field to us and never, ever trotted past and always stopped to let us pass and stuff.
I would be very tempted to take it further TBH and find out where she is from, or maybe send a letter to all the yards in your area warning them of her behaviour. It will get back to her and next time she may take a bit more care passing others whilst out hacking.
Or the other option if you see her out and about again is wait until she dismounts to catch her loose horse and hit her with your schooling whip on her bottom! Quite sharply and say 'no you mustn't behave like that'! Then while she is stood there in shock trot off at a spanking pace! Her lead horse will probably follow you, and she wont be able to hold her ride horse on its own so that will be free and also follow you. Maybe a long walk in the cold chasing 2 horses with a whippes ass will change her behaviour!

That is not rude, utterly dangerous and putting lives at risk, riders, possible pedestrians with children and motorists, end of. For such extreme behaviour I would report her to the Police. She is commiting an offence of riding furiously on a public highway.
It is a shame you do not have the motorists no. as a witness but you do at least have your friend.

Well she should be riding a broom. Up herself madam. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, particularly one who thinks she is the World's greatest horsewoman (not). Talk about riding rage.

Yes, HH - I wasnt blaming the Hunt, but as a women connected with the Hunt, she knows full well that manners should be used, when in the saddle.
She is the kind of person that gives the hunt a bad name and I for one am "for" Hunting - not against!

Tut Tut completely out of order, I would have had some very stern words for the woman in question. Someone could have been killed!

If she works for the someone conected with the hunt? I would get her sacked. I had a no it all bi*ch here a few years ago. It was me who had to collect the loose horses and I ended up working them becauses she was scared of them. So The MFH in question giving me the liveries and I kicked her and her Bolshoi daughter off the yard. All horses were calm and happy again

This "lady" used to be an ok horsewoman (I presume), but she is now late 60s and has lost her nerve. She panicks at the first sign of any problem and shouts in a very loud voice, demanding that everyone does as she says I would like to ride and lead two of mine, but I dont, as I cant hand on heart, say that one of them wouldnt break free, so therefore I dont. Shame this "lady" cant admit the same instead of upsetting everyone else, who are innocently hacking about in control of their horses.

LOL - the friend that I hacked with, said she would have resorted to some very loud F words, had she been there, however, my role as a pink fairy prohibits me from swearing unless there is absolutely no other "more fairylike" way forward !
Sometimes being angelic, is quite an effort!!!

Terrible behaviour, and stupid as well as if you have a fall due to her frightening your horse it could cause her a problem if your horse gets loose and she has one horse on the lead, much more of a problem than her slowing down and over taking in walk and not getting home as fast as she wants.

I'm horrified, I've never liked hacking on the roads anyway so if I'd have come across this ridiculous woman it probably would have put me off for life! What an inconsiderate idiot. What if you'd been riding a very young/novicey horse and had a fall? That would have been 2 horses loose on a road with a possibly injured you, motorists and a crazy woman! Recipe for disaster. So glad no one was hurt.

Heavens above! I've only just seen this - what a way (not to blacken the good name of the local hunt, the MFH, equine road users and indeed riders/owners in general.
Quite apart from being downright flipping dangerous.
On good roads in my Hunt horse days I would be known to cut corners and lead out 2 - (one each side) safe, mannerly and compatable ones only. In bridles, with a coupling onto the 2 snaffle bit rings and a decent length of leadrein each. Plus, as they were used to being taken out like that (into the hunting field) to change 'second horses', they were therefore used to it and obviously to each other. Those were the days!
Word of advice - don't ever get off if you can help it, you are a darn sight safer staying on board.
LP, however did you keep your patience...........?
