Violet was weaned from her foal yesterday. Any special tips to ensuring she doesnt get mastitis? I have had it and its not nice

If you can, then cut down her hard feed as that seems to help milk dry up. Plenty of hay/haylage will keep her going.

cut out any hard feed, DON'T touch her udder, I've never had a mare with mastitus in 40 yrs of breeding.

Violet is very tucked up - is that normal for a mare that just had her foal taken away? I am guessing yes? She is eating and drinking, but her udder is very full and she is tucked up and not herself

don't give her any feed at all. she can survive on hay/haylage quite comfortably. As much turnout as possible and if she doesn't move about much a bit of gentle lunging wouldn't do any harm. It will take a while for her udder to go completely, I weaned mine 3 weeks ago and the mares still have a bit of mammary development but it's not tight or uncomfortable so don't expect it to disappear overnight. She will tell you if there is a problem. xx

I just leave them be, the more walking around the better, try not to touch it. She will be tucked up for at least a few days, if not more. You have just taken her baby away after all!!! Its only a sign of stress, not malnutrition!!! The milk should dry up within about 2-3 weeks. It will leak all down her legs for the first couple of days. Just keep an eye and any heat, yellow liquid, call the vet xxx

Violet looks much better today. Her bag has gone right down. She mooched around quite happily in the field and she isnt tucked up anymore.
She has had a nice groom, her mane pulled and tail cut. Front shoes on and a lovely new PINK NZ put on!
Physio coming tomorrow to check her back, so that she is 100% ready for saddling up.
Back into slowly getting her ridden again, once the snow clears.

I also shouldnt worry too much in this weather regarding mastitus there should be no flies which are often the main cause, and ditto above just hay and plenty of exercise. OMG Pink rug what a diva!!!!!!! She will be uncomfortable but over a few days it will ease and she will be less tucked up!!!!!

Are you sure it wasnt the pink sparkly thing that made her tucked up?
