Would it be possible for a coloured p/b welsh to be homozygous?
or do both parents have to be coloureds ?
thanks

To be homozygous for the coloured gene a foal needs to inherit a coloured gene from both its coloured parents. If it justs inherits one then it wont be homozygous. Im guessing only one of the parents is coloured with it being p/b welsh.

I think there is a way of testing to see if they are homozygus, but don't know how, I have a friend who comes on here that has done it, maybe she can enlighten us, where are you limehill?

Unless it's 25% Welsh, one parent a coloured 50% Welsh who inherited the coloured gene from the non-Welsh parent. Then it could be. Not in any way disagreeing with your genetics loulabelle, just extending it to another possibility.

sarahp your right, i was just going for the basics as it does get complicated. Animal genetics www.horsedna.co.uk/ do colour testing as i have had my mare done. Just give them a call they send a form or download one, they need about 30 hairs pulled from the root. Think its about 30pound ish and takes about a week. I had my mare tested for grey and unfortunately she was homozygous bl**dy grey!!

Yes, I've got some of those too! But at least most of the baby grey fillies coming up are heterozygous - not that I have anything against greys, I just like a variety!

Yes both parents MUST be coloured in order for the foal to have a chance of being homozygous at all. You can get a homozygous out of 2 non homozygous coloured parent's or obviously 2 homozygous parents or a non homozygous parent and another homozygous parent. But suffice to say if one parent is solid coloured....no chance.

we have bred three Homozygous progeny and Eventrider is quiet correct the sire and dam of our three TT are Heterozygous and only carry one copy of the Tobiano gene. To be Homozygous the foal must have inherited 2 copies of the TO TO gene and there is a 25% chance of this happening.
