Just to warn a photo overload by a proud "parent"!!!!!!!!!! Just thought id let everyone know how well Bathleyhills Mondial (AKA Arthur) is doing and put a few old and updated photos on!!!! As many of you know Arthur was born on the 30th May 2010 and we sadly lost our lovely mare Mona four hours after foaling we were devasted. This photo is one I treasure of our last few hours with Mona This was Arthur at only a day old, looking quite little and forlorn Arthur continued to go from strength to strength although we did have problems if we changed his food with tummy upsets and such and a times we wondered if we would keep him. This is Arthur at only a couple of days old How could you be cross with a little face like this!!!!!! Over the next few months Arthur has been to quite a few parties!!!!! He was presented at the BEF gaining a 2nd premium, presented at the ZfDp foal inspections and gained a Foal Premium which made us so proud and we were congratulated on how well he looked and his condition He has also been to the SPSS Show and gained 2nd place Sports Pony Foal. Then at the British National Foal Show he gained 3rd place Riding Pony and 4th placed Sports/Competition foal This was him the day before the foal show This was him yesterday with his first introduction to snow which he found very exciting and scary at the same time!!!!!!! So from this little person To this in only a matter of a few months!!!!!

Aaw well done with him, he is a credit to you, we had an orphan once, they are very hard work especially in the first few weeks, he is 16 now, love him to bits, but what a little monster he is, thinks he is human,

How wonderful - made me cry. You've done a fantastic job, well done you. I know how hard it is to lose a precious mare at foaling, you have her strong and healthy baby - you must be so proud. Well done.

Thank you for your lovely replies, Wilmira did your boy ever learn to be a horse? ?? Arthur obvious is the apple of our eye and can do NO wrong (well to us anyway!!!!!!) However I think it is questionable at times!!!!!!! He always just has a glint of naughtiness in his face it has huge expression!!!!!!! Although it doesnt always tell you he is about to jump on your head lol!!!!!!!

Thank you for your lovely replies, Arthur has been very hard work however every minute has been well worth it. We have been unable to go anywhere without careful consideration to him, even to go to a show OH has had to have a day off work to tend to him whilst I was out, it has proved to be costly and time consuming. Never mind at the cost of milk and milk pellets!!!
Would we do it again? Yes without a doubt!!!!!!
It has been a huge learning curve of which nobody can give you the exact answers and all the time it was experimenting with a very little frail person, I would especially like to thank Trudy at End House, who yet again has been supportive as I e mailed her to start with and she rang me straight away and answered questions before I got to them regarding management at the time I didnt really know I would have those questions and didnt understand the answers but Arthur has pretty much thrown everything at us from angel to devil, illness insecurity and downright dangerous at points!!!!!!!
I have spoken to many people who have had similar problems this year and hope my advise has been helpful if it hasnt been then tough!!!! ;D I can only speak from my experience which obviously is ongoing!!!!
We still have a long way to go with management but Arthur now has a friend who shares his stable and he will go out in our back garden which has 6 foot panel fencing so he cant get out or try as in the field he wont stay on his own or with his friend (who he just tolerates!!!)
I hope to get him out showing next season so he can learn some manners about the outside world, of which he feels is only for his entertainment and nothing else!!!!! He is very unsure on other horses outside the yard, at home he doesnt bother about anything but he panics a little around "outside" horses, I believe it must be a different smell or something that he finds difficult but he im sure will find a happy medium and cope in time!!!!!
In answer to your question fabfern Arthur tore Monas uterus as he turned to be presented and there was absolutely nothing anyone could have done, all I can say is the risks are there with any foaling that you may not have either at the end of it, but most foalings go without trouble, the best advise is from my point of view is supervise, supervise supervise, set a camera up so you dont disturb the mare whilst watching and call the vet if you have any doubts at all, time is the essence with foalings.
However as a breeder I would always suggest to people who havent foaled down to send their mare to a stud who will recognise problems much quicker. It may mean you miss out on the actual birth but sometimes that is safer, and if there is a problem you have an outside person who can deal with it without an emotional attachment or ask a local stud if you can go and watch a few it might mean sitting up a few nights but at least you know "hopefully" what a normal birth looks like and what to do. We would always welcome anyone to come to us and sit up with us.
We know for definate if we hadnt been there for Mona and Arthur we would not have had either without any doubt.
Oh dear ive written an essay!!!! ;D

Thanks for such brilliant advice. I totally agree with watching the birth either from a camera or in the next door stable as things can go wrong so quickly. At one point this year people on forums with safe and successful births were apologising that things had turned out well as they appeared to be in the monority. Things can and do go wrong and no one should enter breeding without realising that it can be dangerous. Arthur is a very precious boy - and he is very lucky to have you as his foster mum. Lets hope that 2011 will be better year for breeders as 2010 was the pits.

Im soooooooooo excited already and some of my foals arent weaned yet lol!!!!!!! ;D I would like to add our other 10 foalings went almost text book with no other particular complications bar a couple of "bendy" legs which have straightened well, Oh and of course we had the mare that went to 386 days............... ;D That was a bit of a nightmare too!!!!!! Paulal you or anyone else are more than welcome to get in touch via pm or telephone I am always happy to run things through I cant guarantee its always the right advise but often it helps to chat!!!!! Lisa, LOL Good olde Ruby what a star, why should we be on our own with a Tiger, we dont mind you having one too!!!!!!! ;D

what a lovely though sad story. You have been very dedicated, so well done. Just out of interest, and if you don't mind, could you say what were the signs that the mare was hurt internally? At what point did you realise there was a problem?

Mona went into shock just before she had Arthur, she was very shaky, weak sweating and drastically lost temperature she was freezing to the touch. She struggled with the birth and we immediately rugged her up and kept her as comfortable as we could whilst the vet arrived. It is something Id dread and hate to see again, however I would instantly recognise what was happening, as of course at the time we knew we had a massive problem but just not what it was. We had to try and keep her going for as long as possible to get the colostrum for Arthur both by helping him suck and milking her when that wasnt possible so we could tube him. At that point we had to put him first.

Oh my GOODNESS look at him he is absolutely stunning and a real credit to you!! Well done for sticking with him and keeping at it, Mona gave you one beautiful chap to look after for her as she knew you'd do it so well xxxx p.s. I remember that mare as I think her and my mare were in a competition to see how long either could hold onto the baby for!!!
