Made me cry. Wanted to see the west end show before I saw this, now I'm not so sure. Bit too traumatic.

I thought it was totally in-appropriate for the audience.
Everyone had been laughing and clapping, all very happy. Then the War Horse came on, causing the mood to flatten entirely.
Children were crying and walking out, their day ending in sadness, instead of happiness.
Sorry - not saying it isnt very clever, but it was NOT appropriate for Olympia.

I think maybe if they'd had it as a display, say before the interval, with a warning over the PA to say some people might find it upsetting. Then they could have had the normal olympia finale.

To be fair, I suppose there are lots of people who might be upset by it for whatever reason and they can't be expected to forsee everything. What they could have done though, was put a warning in the programme, and put a warning over the tannoy, and placed it in the schedule somewhere like before the interval, so people had the option to go out and get a drink, do some shopping or whatever, so as to avoid it. Then people wouldn't have been upset needlessly.

I agree. The problem is because it is a children's book they thought it would be OK. I think people that aren't into horses just don't "get" how seriously we all take our duty to make sure horses don't suffer - even if it is only a puppet!

I did think that War Horse was perhaps not the best choice for the Grande Finale. Although in the theatre it was absolutely fantastic. I am also not entirely sure that it is a suitable production for it to be viewed "in the round" ie it should be up on a stage not seen from both sides.
The start of the play with the foal when it was young was probably a better part to be shown. You should not have to put a warning over the tannoy at a Christmas show as it is entirely reasonable that the audience should think that the whole show is suitable.

Sorry I was asking about the piece that Kelly Marks and Pie did - we took our new hunter to meet Joey the War Horse (puppet) and I wondered how that demonstration was received. It certainly wasn't sad!

Thoroughly enjoyed it, we had children with us who thoroughly enjoyed it too.

Has anyone seen the westend production? I am hoping to go and see it for my birthday in August which is just before it closes. I have it is utterly fantastic?

I saw War Horse on Broadway during a recent trip to NY. It was brilliant and well received by the NY audiences and critics. Very moving & emotional, as a horsey person you totally understand the interpretation of movement and reactions almost forgetting it's a puppet. I still cried my eyes out but I wasn't alone! I heard Spielberg is making a film of the story - that will be a definate no for me!

I agree calerux - a film with real horses "really?" - no way I would want to see that!
