How long does it take, once a mare has had a foal, to get rid of the baby belly? I have been riding Violet everyday for a week and she still looks in foal ;D She is only walking for a month as two years off, is a long time, so will it take forever for her to lose that shape?

I think they all vary - some mares instantly look like they've never been in foal others keep that brood mare look!! Bit like people i guess - all different!!

defo agree, I have ones that look like they have never had a foal, where as I have a couple who look permantly pregnant, lots of slow gentle exercise to strenghten the tummy muscles up - just like us!!!

lots of steady regular gentle exercise and if you can do one hour a day split it into two sessions instead

I have just taken a couple of piccies of "the belly" and you can all have an update on whether is shrinks or grows!!!!
She was AI ed last year and scanned in foal, but then no heart beat found, so cyst presumed.
If the belly grows...........

Dont say that, cos I would get too excited, as she probably isnt. She failed a heartbeat scan and she also failed HTPs ring test!!!!!!
She cant be in foal after failing the ring test !!!!!!

that low slung belly does look a bit suspicious !! either in foal or as they say 9mths to put it on 9 mths to lose it (or in equine terms she may still have a slack belly) like me 9yrs on

She would be due in July. I am convinced she is in foal, but maybe that is wishful thinking? She was scanned empty, then a week later, when we were scanning to see if she was coming into season - she surprised us all, by scanning in foal after all! 4 days later, I took her back for the heart beat scan, but we found no heart beat. Therefore, we presumed "in foal" to be a cyst However......... I have always had a hunch......... time will tell ??

Why dont you ask the vet to have a feel next time she comes to vaccinate or something. That will put your mind at rest then you can plan work/feeding to suit(and start knitting pink bootees )

Vet saw her and said I am right to think she could be !!!
She observed that Violet is not fat in any other area, other than baby area !!!
She said she wanted to have a proper look / test her.
I said NO - as I am enjoying my lovely fantasy of a new foal arriving and dont want to hear otherwise at the moment.
I am feeding her a balancer and nothing that could harm a foal.
She is in light work under saddle, which the vet says wouldnt hurt her, if she was in foal.
I kind of think, in another month under saddle, that belly really should have started to shrink up?
Maybe you all think I am a bit nuts, but having lost my son, the day dream of having a surprise foal, is very comforting - even if it is only a pipe dream xxx

For what it is worth it does give a lot of indication that she is but I think even if it turns out she is not in foal at least it is something to dream about for the minute. Bump watch is a great distraction and something positive to focus on for a while and you deserve that. I really have everything crossed for another little bay filly for you as Violet appears talented at making those looking at the lovely Velvet.
