Large straw beds with big banks.... they didnt however prevent a mare last year foaling into the banks, and going and getting herself cast! this was a mid morning foaling and thankfully we were watching on the cctv and so i quietly went in and removed the banking that the foal was being squashed into! I am this year considering switching from straw to another bedding a couple of days after the birth as i hate straw! the mares will continue to have big shavings beds until a few weeks before they foal. They also are then monitored via CCTV and this year we have the addition of a foaling alarm.

elmere you make sound as if i am not botherd and just taking a risk well am not i take my ponies seriously and look after them to the best of my abilaty they still will pick at treated straw and not all vet and people agree with each other do they and like i said 1 has never foaled outside and 1 is maiden and i would not want a maiden mare foaling around other ponies I don't think thats what elemere is implying in the slightest. You have obviously decided what you are doing when foaling time comes so just go with it. For myself, I wouldn't use a shavings bed for foaling as have seen ingested shavings kill a newborn foal, as well as the hassle of adhering to the umbilical stump, and sticking around the milky mouth and chin! Hope everyone's foalies arrive ok!
