Sadly these horses were electrocuted whilst walking on the grass in the paddock of Newbury Racecourse. 2 horses died and a few others went wobbly before regaining the rubber walkway surface. An ongoing investigation is in process but Southern Electric have dig up and removed the electric cables that ran along under the surface of the parade ring. They will be carefully scrutinized to find the fault. At the moment the Racecourse has been declared safe and I just hope that they have found the problem and have everything totally under control. Newbury will try to restage the race fixture later in the week once given the total all clear.
It was a truly sad day for racing. We ask our horses to race for us and we know the risks involved but what happened at Newbury is one thing no one in the world could have expected to happen.
RIP Felix Two and Marching Song. And also to the wonderful horses who lost their life in Ireland yesterday too under normal racing circumstances - Glencove Mariner and Money Trix. My thoughts go out to their owners, trainers and stable staff that look after them.
