I blame the education system. My sister is a doctor in science and a head teacher. She explained that now in exams it does not matter what the english and spelling is like, as long as the information is correct. I know I am old but when I did O-Levels, even if you got the information correct, but the english and/or spelling was incorrect, it got marked wrong. My neice is 18 at Univeristy and she still gets quite/quiet and their/there wrong. So what chance do the children have!!!

I agree with you Phibbles, I'm suprised people have got so uptight about this thread. No-one is pointing fingers, the original poster just said that there is a lot of bad spelling and that is true. No accusations have been made personally, it is just fact that the standard of english has gone down. I think probably texting is a big contributing factor as there seems to be a bit of confusion between english and text-speak and also predictive text which just takes over anyway. Having said that some of the young texters will probably have heightened reactionary skills - have you seen the speed they can text

Another problem that people probably share is, is that they just can not be bothered to type properlly... after a long stressfull day at work, do you really think most people really care if they make careless errors... i cannot remember any of my english lessons from school and i dont care to, boring subject always a good period for a snooze lol

good job i dont care what people think of me then isnt it...
i mean i work long hours, have 3 horses, two young children, when i sit down to the lappy im either being harrassed or im just that tired, as long as i get the point across, or i can understand what im reading its no big deal, theres more to life than spelling, grammer blah blah blah

Not only does it concern me that some people can't spell but also they seemingly can't read!
I did say the typos are understandable, it is the fact that many users of this forum are unaware of the correct meanings of words. It came to light to me when I read about 5 posts in a row where people didn't know how to use basic words:
there, their, bought, brought.....
I just found it surprising thats all, and I see nothing wrong or boring about making the effort to use correct language!

In all fairness, those oldies amongst us ( and I include myself in that) probably had a better standard of education, tough but in the most part, fair. Regular spelling tests etc helped us to understand grammar, and remember, using spell check won't always tell you when you've got the wrong there/their, you're/your etc. I sympathise with people if they really are dyslexic, but those who just use it as an excuse for poor spelling are making light of a serious condition. Also, some posts using wrong words, spellings etc make it nigh on impossible to understand what the poster is trying to get across. I hated maths at school (still do but forced myself to do it at evening class & managed a Grade C GCSE) and despite weekly mental arithmetic tests I NEVER managed to get 10/10 and I STILL don't know all my times tables!!

We have spelling tests weekly in our primary school and they are not worth the time spent on them IMO. The kids spell them right in the test then get them wrong when applied to their work! You will always get poor spelling. In formal situations it is unforgivable but this is supposed to be a relaxed environment!! I think in the grand scheme of things, there are more important things to worry about.

Well my spelling mistakes are genuine ;D I have dyslexia and to be honest unless the spell checker does the words itself then its hard to use sometimes. Some days are better than others but having had people having a go because my spelling wasnt perfect it does hurt when you cant help it and people and slating it. There did I get all the words right???

Hang on a minute, it's for chatting, of a friendly nature!!!! It's starting to sound a bit more like a knocking shop LOLOLOL!!!!
Seriously though, we're quite nice in there, if a little bit lairy sometimes, and all the newbies are welcome to come in for a bit of banter and a laugh, oh and it's quite good for support and encouragement too. You might find people a bit brutally honest in some of the other threads but that's one where we make a proper effort to 'play nice'. xx

if you said it was a knocking shop i'd be in there like a shot ;P so this place isnt a dating site then !!! lol hey i may risk the chat thing sometime i can hold me own but dont blame me if i start any wars thou AMWAP is spoken for and all the men are after her so you best get to the back of the queue because she is drop dead gorgeous with big boobs. She is very articulate and I have never seen her make a spelling or grama'tickle' error. (This last sentence in an effort to get back on the subject of spelling!) ;D
