Does anybody else find it infuriating using the working in arenas at events when other riders don't understand the rules of the arena such as left to left and leavign other riders an acceptable amount of room when passing them?

I find this one of the most annoying things about shows!! We were out at the weekend where a well known producer was working in, going like a bat out of hell dodging in out of spaces, was quite dangerous as small children were trying to work their first ridden ponies in, wouldn't mind but there was a huge outdoor arena that was open for working in, we had been in there and made our way up to the indoor waiting for our class so didn't directly affect us, but even so it still annoyed me that she seemed to have no regard for others.

Oh yes I hATE this with a passion and I have crashed into people, when riding, deliberately before to get them to LOOK UP and see where they are going!!! Left to left aint all that hard to remember and to look out for In Handers as well. I ended up with a broken foot and torn achillies as I got ran over by a big hunter type when i was warming up my horse for an inhand, rider was too busy examining their midriff to look up and see where they were going

would have to say the worst i have ever seen was a working in area that might as well have been the same size a one pence. people were cantering in all directions! not to mention the amount of people just stood in the middle! my mum went to complain she said "please can you tell some one to get the ponies that are walking around to leave as the arena is getting a bit dangerous" they said "tell the steward about it" mum said "WELL THEY MUST HAVE A WHITE STICK SEEN AS THEY'RE JUST STANDING THERE WATCHING AND WAITING FOR A DISASTER TO HAPPEN"

i should have put a red ribbon in (she dosent kick but it dosent hurt to give any horse a wide birth!!!)

I hate it so much! At a show one day there was a horse with a red ribbon in and this other girl comes galloping up behind the pony and scares it so much. It started bucking and bolting. Luckily enough the rider was very good and no one got hurt.

I get so annoyed when working in! Some people just have no common sense! I was at a show on my coloured & she is a very hard pony to ride, you have to do loads of walk/halt transition before you even think about trotting. Anyway, I had just started trotting when a girl on a (tbh, I have no idea what it was!) came catering up behind me so I pulled my pony to a halt (She has been taught trot/canter to halt as she does SJing) & the girl yelled "You silly cow!" So I replied "Oh, I am terribly sorry, but you shouldn't be that close." I could go on & on about this subject all day!

I think its all ages, they have no commen sense it seems! Luckily my ponies dont kick, but if they did they would have such a shock, I must say though, the ones that show arnt as bad as the ones thatshowjump, seriously they are dangerous.Once there was this older girl on a coloured warming up, I was warming up to go in the newcomers and she was galloping round the ring douing 3 times the speed of sound. She then had the cheek to shout and curse everone in the ring, so mother told her were to stuff it.

I completely agree!! Especailly people who walk on the outside track and don't concentrate on what is going on around them. I have a baby too, and people come cantering up head on and then dodge at the last second, that would make any horse uneasy! It's comon courtesy!

oh and another one if your warming up for whp and have to share the same warm up as SJ'ers and someone tottles in on a 16.2 whacks the fence up to 1.10 and leaves it up when both rings are still on pony classes 75/85/95 cms !

The first time I took my little 13hander out to show jump, (our first proper show) we were in the warm up, taking things nice and steady, there where ponies cantering round and jumping off both reins in chaos and although a little understandably sharp my mare was fine until some pig headed kid comes whizzing round behind me in a flat out gallop, swerves last minute then comes round again! Now, my mare had never kicked under saddle but this pony was so far up her backside she panicked and kicked out at it (missed) and had had such a shock she proceeded to bolt and throw in a few hearty bucks for good measure. Luckily, I had a backside like velcro at that time, stayed on and sorted her out, she then went on to jump double clears but I still went home a nervous wreck! I went to that show ground twice more that season as it is very local to us, once more to show jump and once to show-it didn't get any better either time and I will never take anything but the most unflappable pony there again!

ahhh what a relief to know that there are others out there who understand left to left and slow pace to the inside track i was begining to think it was a figment of my imagination or something that had gone out of the window along with basic manners. i did once try the "please pass to left" approach (and i did say it nicely) while working my cob in on an indoor. the well painted teenager full of self importance with a sparkley show team jacket on gobbed her pony to a halt and screamed " i can read ur mind u stupid fat cow" to which i replied "you dont need to read my mind, its etiquette" ... somewhere inbetween her ff's n geff's reply she said "well i dont know what that is, but its not in rules for this show ... get a life" what goes around comes around, i judge her two weeks later she did lose her place, but only because the pony she was riding that day would not canter on the correct leg on one rein despite many attemps. i would never judge a grudge, but did feel for her as she looked mortified she was being judged by the person she had hurled so much foul abuse at.

Have to agree about the dressage and the schooling whips!! And use of whips when passing other competitors!! My last pony was terrified of them when I first got him, and while warming up for a dressage test someone came past very close to us and just as they got alongside us gave their horse quite a hard tap. My poor boy though they were going to hit him and got very unsettled.

Someone has actually hit my pony once, luckily my pony wasnt the spooky type, I politely said, " please can you not hit my pony" She gave me the most rooten look.
But I cant believe it is sooooo simple just to get left TO left, not rocket science.

I was warming up my warmblood mare this weekend. It was her first show in 3 years, having being injured and had a foal. She was wildly excited and felt like a PSG stallion on rocket fuel! I walked around on an inner track, avoiding everyone like the plague. Time and and time again I got people charging straight at her, which caused her to leap away, spin and then rear I got her totally and utterly under control again and she was going beautifully. Then a young girl galloped - YES GALLOPED - off the bit - straight at us. I shouted WHOOOOOAAAAAAA , as my mare shot off again accross the arena I then apologised to the young girl and said I was trying to keep her and myself safe. The next thing is her dad is giving me daggers and everytime I went near him, he said that I needed to get control of my horse. I dont disagree, that being in control of my horse at all times, would be just LOVELY.......BUT in a prelim - there is no requirement for galloping flat out off the bit - so why was his daughter doing it in a small school full of other people warming up? Also, at prelim level, you get young , inexperienced horses, who are quite often over-excitable and not 100% trustworthy. You also get, very young children (my son included) who is terrified of badly behaved horses. Not sure what the answer to all this is? But fiesty young/over excited horses - mixing with very novice children - is not a very good match is it?
