A home-produced show pony has died following injuries sustained in a traffic accident on the M4 near Swansea.
Penual Jilly was on her way back from the Ponies (UK) Winter Championships at Addington Manor on Sunday 6 March — where she was Lee-Smith reserve supreme — when a car collided with the back of the trailer in which she was travelling.
Vets and fire engines were at the scene for two hours, but the pony could not be saved.
Owner Hayley Grota said that Jilly was "a mother's dream".
The seven-year-old Welsh section A had already won several in-hand classes and these championships were her first under saddle, where she was partnered by Hayley's six-year-old daughter Liberty.
"She was 11.31/2hh and would have lasted Libby for years," said Hayley, who had spent two years looking for a suitable first ridden type.
"Jilly was a lovely, kind pony with a fantastic temperament and didn't get the chance to show how good she was."
The Grotas normally transport their horses in a horsebox, but were using a trailer while their horsebox was being resprayed in Cardiff on the way home.

How awful for all concerned with this - particularly the little rider who must be finding it so hard to cope. RIP Penual Jilly and sincer thoughts to everyone involved.

gosh, what a tragedy, it is a horrible thought if someone hits you from speed behind in a forward facing trailer

RIP Jilly , i know the children where very fond of this pony and are totally heart broken.
thinking of you all at cadlan valley and im really sorry for your loss, thank goodness the children escaped with no injuries.

I am so sorry and sad to read about this and it brings back horrible memories. We had an idiot drive into the back of our trailer whilst towing on the M27 three years ago, leaving the trailer loose on the motorway. Although trailer and vehicle were writeoffs our two ponies escaped with bruising and I count our blessings every day since. I am so sorry this little pony didnt have the same outcome. Ours was a forward facing Ifor Williams trailer.

Words cannot express the sorrow i feel for you. I was in tears reading the piece from H&H, just the thought of it is unbearable, especially as it happened so close to us.

How awful, that is everyone's worst nightmare, my girls would be devastated and my heart goes out to them all.
Maybe PUK could present a trophy in her honour at their next champs.
