I went to a demo at myerscough college, the demo had a well known rider on a 4 yr old and she was digging it that much with her spurs it was bleeding, the horse was a grey so looked very obvious. We walked out and made a complaint. Spurs are used too often!

This is disgraceful - I hate people of my age show jumping against the clock at a very competitive level when they want to win. They never clear the jump correctly - they never even make correct turns, they just rush around jumps for a ribbon at the end of the day. Nearly all the children wear spurs when they do not, know how to use them SAFELY and CORRECTLY. There is a girl in my village of 14 who show jumps against the clock and does quite well at BSJA and county shows. She has won at various shows at aintree etc.... My sister was hacking out once and saw her on a 13.2 grey pony who looked 'on it's toes'. She had a bit we couldn't even name in it's mouth, martingale, flash noseband, and spurs on. It was prouncing up and down but we said to her "loosen your reins and reward her when she goes forward and reassure her." When it worked she looked grateful but when it spooked at something in the hedge she shortened her reins (instead of riding forward) and jabbed on it mouth pulling it to a halt but at the same time she STUCK her heels in the pony's side and the poor thing was so confused whether to go back or forth!!!!! We said to her "if you push her forward this might help" but instead she wacked it on the bottom with her whip and looked furious when it cantered off. ...........

Absolutely appalling I sometimes SJ my coloured. When we are against the clock, I literally sit back & relax, she knows what she is doing & she just does it. Yes, she goes slightly faster than usual (Which is what you are supposed to do) but she turns her corners perfectly & leaves the poles up I never wear spurs (I think I remember wearing them once with my 12hander when we were making the transfer from LR/FR to Opens) & I very rarely carry a whip. Why do people do these things? It really is beyond me I wonder how they feel when they see what they have done to their ponies? Ashamed? Sad? Sorry? Or proud? They wouldn't have done it in the first place if they wanted to feel ashamed, sad or sorry

When I was taught to ride (some 35 years ago ) It was instilled in me a whip is a very useful schooling aid, and NOT a tool for punishment! I taught my daughter the same way, and although she sometimes gets frustrated, she would never dream of raising a stick to her ponies, infact when she gets off, she will ask for feedback as to why the pony was having an 'off day', and advice for next time. (She's 16) Its all down to correct teaching, and supervision by parents. Too many parents these days use a pony as a 'babysitter' thinking they can abandon their child at the yard, and have the day to themselves...... What chance do they have....

quite agree cholderton - at one stage at our PC, there were a couple of parents who wouldn't have known what the loan pony their kids had even looked like - BUT - at least those kids actually wanted the ponies, appreciated what they had & were keen to learn.
My daughter wore spurs sometimes when she graduated onto horses at 14 due to problems with both knees - but, like all aids, they are not for use in anger. There is no place for this. If you're in a bad mood - leave your horse alone if you can't control your temper.

agree ilmp - have nothing against, against the clock show jumping if it is done correctly like yourself. It is when they use spurs and just rush around the course with no accuracy or thought but just stabbing spurs in there sides. I will never, even think of using spurs in my life to 'tell off' my horse. My Mum also said the blood might have come from a thing in show jumping they call 'wrapping' This is where, to my disgrace , they put spikes under the horses girth to make them pick their feet up when they go over a jump because the spike will make them jump higher.... Just makes you think of some of the drastic measures people will go to for a 1st place

This is awful I would never ever want to hurt my ponies!!!!! I've also heard of showjumping poeple that when they train there horses at home when the horse/pony is about to jump the jump they have two poeple standing each side of the jump and they quickly rise the pole they say "it makes them pick there feet up" But it just scares them! And they could get hurt!!!

It's called "rapping"...as in they "rap" the horse as it goes over a jump. Used to be a fairly common practice among so called professionals many years ago. I've seen it done...and it's disgusting.
