The vet came out this afternoon, had a good look and feel and confirmed it is a sarcoid and that the best course of action was to band it which she then did.
Cannot believe how well our pony stood whilst she put the bands on - had been worrying all day that he would get stroppy but he was a perfect gentleman - or a brave little soldier as our vet put it!
Spent extra time giving him lots of fuss and attention this evening to try and take his mind off his leg!

That's great rufty. Nice inexpensive option. I had one done a few years ago. It was on skin that would move when the horse moved. It, the band, fell off within two days so I thought it would not work. Then all the skin around it went black and hard. I was mortified and booked the vet again. The day after the whole lot was gone, sarcoid, black skin, the lot and he was left with nice pink healthy skin which quickly covered over with hair.

Just to let you know the lump (and bands) have now dropped off and the scar area left has scabbed over. The scar area looks clean and I am keeping an eye on it until it heals over obviously. Also making sure he is sprayed well to keep flies away.
