When showing, i generally am fairly satisfied with the judging, ok, i undersatnd that there is a small chance to beat the producers. However, wjile competing at the ameteur showing winter champs, I was disgusted that a barely sound pony won the veteran, yes I understand it was old, however the rest of the ponies were all sound. The judge totally disregarded the ones who actually did a nice show. It must of been some of the most appauling juding I have ever seen.

...But A judge should identify weather its sound or not, thats basic knowledge.

i agree iwth what you are saying, we were at a show today and my friends pony recently suffered form lami because he is overweight and now he is in perfect condition not overweight or to thin and all the judges were placing the overweight ponies in front of him

check veteran rules, sure they state soundness is not essential (from what I remember).

Agree- surely if a horse is not sound you shouldn't be riding it?!

i saw one pony @ local showing and to me it didnt look sound... (veteran) - it didnt win - my friend did on her (brilliant) horse
but it pees me off judges sometimes pick overweight/unsound horses over the sound and fit ones!!!!

Unfortunately veteran judging can be a bit hit and miss, I have competed in veteran classes and have agreed with the results, however I went to a show at Croft top last year, there were only two of us in the class, my mare was 19 and the other competitors pony was 36, I came second and to my disgust the judge said to me when presenting my rosette that my mare was the better of the two, in better condition and moved better but that she felt sorry for the older pony and was amazed at its age I just politely thanked the judge, accepted my rosette, completed the lap of honour and left the ring, I will never show under this judge in a veteran class again a lot of judges will judge a veteran class purely on age which is wrong.

Sorry but as a vhs judge i would never place a unsound horse or pony in hand or ridden, the horse as to be fit enough and happy despite its age, to compete, problem is some people dont know when its time to stop showing a older horse if it has persistant unsoundness, yes we understand an amount of stiffness or not as flexiable as a young horse, but a lame animal shouldnt be in there ...
