I too love Roberts old photos of the good old days of long jackets, discreet browbands and really top class ponies

I have to agree. Looking at his photos (I wasn't around then to see those beautiful animals in the flesh ) the quality if ponies was far better back then IMO. It really makes me realise how fat some horses are now and I now know why the older generation hate over fed ponies so much, it really does hide quality.

Thanks for the kind comments!! Yes I hadn't realised until I looked at the photos that we had them much leaner..... and it certainly complements their quality....... don't get me started on short jackets or browbands!!!

just had a peek and aren't they gorgeous? These were the ponies i used to look at and dream. Mine although i loved her very much and had loads of fun was more of a "just steer and hope she stops at the end" sort of pony. Like i say a lot of fun but i did daydream about having a show pony and a canter around under the spotlight at HOYS. Loved the comment under one of the pics with regards to the pony not needing a tiny jockey to make it look good. Quality speaks for itself and today there are too many fat, glittery ponies with incy jockeys instead. Somehow the ponies and jockeys of old looked a bit more elegant? Just my humble opinion

LOL Cathor45 in my biased opinion as my daughter has long legs, it was one of the things I thought looking at them and my old BSPS annuals from the 80's, jockeys seem to have shrunk as much as their jackets now!!!

I think it would be lovely and very beneficial to equines and jockeys alike for us to have somewhere that these pictures of the stars of yesterday are in the public domain (incl cobs, hacks and hunters)....perhaps a website or FB page? I think people would be amazed at the difference between "then and now"....especially the amount of weight carried by most show cobs!
For those that never had the chance to see any of these stars in the flesh, they could see how a pony can be produced for the ring without over producing in any way (both in turnout and condition). Mind you, I can hardly comment as Mr PJ judged us recently for the first time....and we were (rightly) "ticked off" for one of the ponies carrying a few extra kilos! Well done to him for commenting though. There is no point in judges deducting marks for tubbiness if the exhibitor is not made aware of this fact.
I am fortunate enough to have seen Holly of Spring win at least one Wembly title....and I remember a lovely bay pony Bennochy ?? win there too. Think Ruth Ilsley was the rider?

That Bennochy pony i think might be Christmas Carol of Bennochy but if it was at the same time ast he only and only Holly Of Spring it would have been Cusop Heiress ( the only pony to beat Holly- at Pagent of the horse Doncaster) dear rpj could you post the photos here please
also recall lennel Aurura, Tomatin Forest Wind, Smalland Otto, Chirk Cavair, Kateslea Zindle perryditch March Wind still think they would take some beating today

Thank you for posting these pictures Mr PJ. I also went on facebook last night to view all of your famous and truely lovely ponies from the past. There must be a way of collecting & displaying pictures of past legends from the showing world so that everyone can enjoy them......... perhaps a facebook page or even a book?

lovely to see these pictures. In those days everything for the jockey was so much plainer and everyone concentrated on the quality and true beauty of the animal instead

So lovely to see all of these ponies, the difference between then and now is amazing. When I was showing way back in the 80s I had an imaginary stable that included the likes of Bennochy Royal Star, Holly of Sping and Young Dragonora plus many more, according to my ten year old self they all belonged to me.

Brilliant to see these! Thank you RPJ for posting them. I am old enough to remember most of them!! Was Gunnerby Aalborg Elegant by Gunnerby Hallmark? I also remember seeing Cratfield Fairy Gold at HOYS in 1988 (I think produced by Davina Whiteman} Thanks again.

I also remember seeing Cratfield Fairy Gold at HOYS in 1988 (I think produced by Davina Whiteman} Thanks again. I think she was by Basford Elegant, and out of a very successful (and very lovely)14hh whp called Gunnerby Aalborg Vestre who herself was "pink". Those pics are fab. My first (and so far only) thread on here was about all time greats...and you all ignored it ;D

I'm sure I've got him in the old BSPS annual from throughout the 80's. I'm sure he was in a few of them. For years I kept my old annuals from the late 70's to mid 90's. I looked for them a few weeks ago when at my parents and it looks like they've been slung out. I'm gutted.

Thanks Haggis . Funnily enough I was thinking about the "good old" BSPS days yesterday. I took my car to a garage and parked outside was a huge very old motor home. It brought memories crashng back of my first BSPS show. There we were, with our little Sinclair trailer..parked next to the Coopers who were there with an enormous wagon..and with a really massive American style motor home (in matching colours to the wagon) parked alongside it! When time came for Cathryn to do her class they lifted her straight from the motor home onto the pony and off she went to win her class (not with Holly who retired the year before) then they lifted her back off again straigt after and put her back in the motor home once more lol.
