Excellent photos and lovely ponies, but the one thing I don't miss from the old day are those saddles, how many jockeys today would be able to ride on one.

I know jinja when my daughter is riding in her armchair of a native pony saddle I smirk when I think of the slippery non-existent things we use to be tortured in!

Thank you for posting these pictures Mr PJ. I also went on facebook last night to view all of your famous and truely lovely ponies from the past. There must be a way of collecting & displaying pictures of past legends from the showing world so that everyone can enjoy them......... perhaps a facebook page or even a book? The HorseGossip Facebook page could probably be used to do that if people wanted....maybe separate status messages for different types

These are brilliant Robert ! I have some lovely pics of Smalland Otto and Piran Larkspur but no means of scanning them , will have to get them done. I also have 24 books of The Horseman's Year from 1947 bought on ebay a few years ago. The pics and articles are fantastic, especially as nothing seems to change regarding comments on judges, manners etc. In fact one writer declared that the children's classes would be so much better if all the kids were orphans.....wouldn't get away with that now !! There is a lovely pic of the Arab stallion Naseel in one of the them, I was so thrilled to see it as I rode a pony by Naseel in the 60's. He was very famous then, does anyone remember seeing a picture titles "All by Naseel, all champions" ? It is in a book by Dorian and Jennifer Williams called "Show Pony" One thing that struck me as I read these old reports that there were always 2 or 3 that dominated each year with such a rivalry between them, especially the time of Legend, Pretty Polly etc. I have always said that I would love to write a book on the British Riding pony, but I think there is one on the way ?

Jinja I have one of those saddles and still ride in it at home - it does remind me to use my seat.
I love the pictures. I remember when I use to stay at The Jagos for the summer riding the show ponies i would spend hours going through their old annuals. I loved Cusop Heiress but my favourite was the 13.2 they had which won HOYS - I can't for the life of me rememeber its name but it was a full section b but so so elegant. I use to dream of trotting down the centre line on such an elegant pony.

I think the Hunnables had Winaway Ambassador too, which took the HOYS 14.2 SP title in 1979 but also did really well at the same time in 15hh workers. Toyd Bewildered (whp of the year 1979) was another one of theirs I loved. The Coopers has another bay 12.2- Carol rode it. I can't remember its name and can't recall it doing big things but it (pic) was on the back cover of the 1979 annual. I've got that "Show Pony" book. I was just looking at it at the weekend. Remember the BSPS monthly glossy magazine it used to produce in the late 70's? It's a same they stopped doing that. I wish I'd kept those too.

All by Naseel, all Champions, was in a booklet by Lt-Col Hope who did Pony Magazine when it wasn't all pink and girly!!. The grey pony which Davina L-S is on is Glide-on - she spent the last decade or so of her life with us at home (the Forge Stud) I as a child, I absolutely adored her. She had been a 12.2hh but just measured out. Yes, they did it in those days, too!! Like you Robert, I have dozens and dozens of pics which I simply must sort out and get scanned. One of those 'just jobs'. Overadaknee keeps on at me re Show Hack pictures. I think I'll take all my suitcases to her and she can sort it all out and drool some more!! R P-J, love to the gorgeous Christopher! Caroline

Clobo- it was indeed Twylands Carrillon as already said and he was only about 12.3hh as well! He was ridden by Poppy Peacock and went down the centre line shortly after the jago's had taken the title with the prolific Coveham Fascination :-)

I think I'll take all my suitcases to her and she can sort it all out and drool some more!! I'd love to see them, and any others anyone has. This thread is fab. It's a shame there are so few pics of ponies and horses from previous decades on the net...or yet Speaking of the Forge Stud there's a few pics on the arabianbloodlines forum of Celtic Ballad, McGredy and a few others. A lady who used to work at the stud (nimlat on there I think) posted them a few years ago. Those were lovely to see too.

He was ridden by Poppy Peathingy and went down the centre line shortly after the jago's had taken the title with the prolific Coveham Fascination :-) If I remember right Ocean So Fair was only 12hh too. It just shows a good littlun will still win if it's good enough.

And Blagdon Gaytime, Runnings Park Hill Star and the pink pony's arch rival Groundhills Mannequin. I preferred the Gunnerby pony but, being a northern girl, liked to see Mannequin do well too but I remember well the huge rivalry between the two camps who had those two back then ;D Oakley Bubbling Simone was another favourite of mine too.

Those were the days when they even used to show the show pony championship in their HOY and RI coverage on the beeb too. I remember Cathyrn and Holly of Spring on Blue Peter too. I think it was just after seeing them on there that prompted my parents to give in and buy me a decent pony and join the BSPS etc.
