does anyone remember a pony called forge pavanne i think she was by mcreedy intrested to know about her as have a pony out of her shhstablemanager would be the one to answer that. Her mum owned the Forge Stud. I can vaguely remember Pavane- successful dark bay 14.2 show pony from the late 70's/very early eighties I think. I had a horse by Celtic Ballad (by McGredy). I think there may be a pic of her in the BSPS year books from around that time. Pic of Mcgredy and a few of his relatives here- www.arabianlines.com/forum1/topic_new.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=19690&SearchTerms=celtic,ballad

Away for a few days, and return to such a rare treat. Thank you so much Mr. Parker Jones.
Only one wish - to be able to turn back the clock!
It would be so nice to see more photographs of our past days Golden Winners, preferably hosted on here, please.

Pic of Mcgredy and a few of his relatives here- www.arabianlines.com/forum1/topic_new.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=19690&SearchTerms=celtic,ballad Wow - a real blast from the past! Thank you Lastchance... I don't wish to hog Robert P-J's 'own thread; but, yes, Forge Pavane was by McGredy (TB) ex Forge Tarantella (NPS/PBA) herself by Shazda (AHSB) and out of Glide-on (PBA by Naseel AHSB) mentioned above re: the centerpage picture in Col Hope's booklet "All by Naseel, all Champions". So - quite a lot of Arab blood there. I'm a usless blogger, hate facebook and never will be a PC expert; when it comes to pics, scanning etc, my poor muddled brain totally freezes over. I don't 'do' Arabian-lines so didn't even know this thread existed, but I do know exactly who put those pics up. And she's learnt a lot & is far cleverer than me! Thanks for the link. Forge Pavane was born in 1975, which is the year that I left home (worked as HG for Jennie L-C that year and then moved to Cheshire & got married in 1976) so, I didn't follow the progress so closely of the last few years of the Forge Stud, however 'Nimlat' did, up until McGredy passed away in 1982. Pavane was shown successfully in hand and then moved up to Lancashire via a brief spell as a three year old with Peter (Nelson) and I in Cheshire. She was produced from the yard of two very young brothers named Hollings, but she was a very sensitive soul, so not the easiest. She took well to breeding though - her whole family have produced some fantastic stock. My memory is getting sorely tested as, (for some strange reason) I'm selling a few things to 'sudonyms' on HG and common bonds keep emerging. It's absolutely uncanny. Even Perfect, (with whom, sadly, a serious family illness creates an immediate link) and I have an amazing amount in common from many years ago. You discover that the world is a very small place and it seems to keep shrinking. Sorry Robert, back on track!

Did you all notice the plaited tails.........far better than cut/razored/shaved tails and the proportionate condition on the ponies..............any of those ponies would still be champions today....wonder what the judges from then would make of the size of ponies today??

As I've said before I was never lucky enough to see these fantastic ponies in the flesh but Keston Music and Walstead Silver Spirit are truly beautiful ponies.

These are lovely ponies and none were shown in grose condition (when did that start?) Some of these bloodlines were headhunted and bought by the Germans to start their breeding program, which is now producing the worlds top dressage ponies. Sadly many of the names were changed (how could that happen?)and the Oakley Bubblings, Bwlch Valentinos, Catherstons, Downlands and many more were the foundation stock to a German dynasty. Is it my imagination or did these ponies move much better than their modern counterparts ? Jane Hoskin

Lovely ponies, brings back memories ! I loved Gunnerby Aalborg Elegant, The old names will never be forgotten, The first mare that was to be the start of the Lennel Stud was Nova Jazz who was also by Shazda! Bought from Mrs Bates of the well known Norwood Stud as a ridden pony as thought not to be in foal ( no scans then! ) Halfway through the hunting season she produced a chestnut colt foal.... Lennel Strolling Minstrel! by Cusop Vagabond. Hope to see lots more of these ponies on this thread x

What year did the BSPS first publish their year book? Not sure. I got my first one in 1979 but they went back earlier than that. The BSPS used to produce a monthly glossy magazine too, which very sadly stopped publication at the end of 1979. That was a brilliant mag, jam packed with show reports and photos. I think a sticky would be brilliant too, and nice if it could include pics of past notable stallions and broodmares too. It would be a great reference point for people who want to see what their pony's ancestors were like.

I don't "do" that forum either but happened to come across it and then that thread when Googling one day. Nimlat never did come back with more pics but it was lovely to find those ones. Am I right that the Mcgredy line were known to be a tad on the "sensitive" side? I know my old boy was a handful. I've never known anything buck like he could. I once mentioned his bucking abilities to Jane Hutchinson (of "Smallprint" fame) who, at the time, at had just lost her McGredy small hunter Barnby Moor and she said he'd had the same talents too ;D

A great idea about stallions and brood mares. The only place i've come across pictures of sire and dam is on the all breeds pedigrees web site, but it is very patchy.

The Sports Horse Data website is a good one. Not many pics on there but it's great for tracing bloodlines. You need to sign up to view a lot of stuff on there (offspring, 2nd offspring etc) but worth it. It even shows you which of the three arab foundation stallions (Godolphin, Byerley or Darley) your horse traces back to. www.sporthorse-data.com/index.htm

Does anyone have pictures of Ardencaple, Elizabeth Arden, Count Dorsaz and Pretty Polly? I definately have numerous pictures of Ardencaple as he lived and stood at stud with us for many years. The others, too. Elizabeth Arden and Pretty Polly both feature in that much mentioned Col. Hope booklet which I'm trying hard to find. SCANNING is my problem, so someone will end up with a very large package through their letterbox before long! (once I have time to seek them out). Anyone fancy a nostalgic photo searching w/e on the (currently very sunny)Scottish Borders with plenty of wine??? R P-J ... did you get to contribute to Tom Best's forthcoming publication?
