I think the 12.2hh in the background of the Holly of Spring pic could possibly be Harmony Bubbling Champagne. Not certain though!!!!

I think its too early for Champagne, and I've just checked yearbook 84 and he had four white socks ! Any way here is a treat from way back.

Alice Clapham? Is that 'Tiny' Clapham the eventer? These bring back a lot of memories for me too. How about Mirth, she got a mention in H&H the other week on the inside back cover. She was turned out in the field, tried to jump a gate somersaulted & broke her neck apparently.

I think the 12.2hh in the background of the Holly of Spring pic could possibly be Harmony Bubbling Champagne. Not certain though!!!! He came out the following year (and as a 7 yr old) I think. What has struck me most about seeing these old pics again is the contrast between how they were ridden then and what we see today. In so many current day pics the ponies heads are hauled in with ridiculously tight short reins and horizontal curbs, with riders looking like they're literally hanging on the reins to balance. In contrast these ponies in the old pics are the very picture of elegance and an absolute joy to look at.

She was turned out in the field, tried to jump a gate somersaulted & broke her neck apparently. 1) That is not what actually killed poor Mirth. The truer story is that she had, at some point in her adult career, ingested a plaiting needle and she died of peritonitis/a ruptured gut. I think one has to roll the two stories together. Seemingly, she had a sort of fit when the rupturing happened and the gate got in the way. Mirth was far too delicate to entertain that sort of jumping. A truly fabulous, ultra quality and ethereal pony. 2) Alice Clapham is not Tiny Clapham. "Tiny" is Diana. Alice was the youngest, and there is a twin brother, Richard (Buffy). The girls both rode for me whilst I was still at home............

I seem to remember that Ocean So Fair was 12.2 pony of the year four times and overall pony of the one on one occasion.

Some fabulous photos. I remember standing at the ringside at shows wishing I could have a pony like that. I had a heinz 57 with an untameable mane However, she stayed with me until her dying day and is buried at the top of our field!! I find it quite interesting about the size of the riders on the ponies. Nowadays we always seem to have small jockeys on large ponies in the plaited sections!

lucynlizzysmum I stood at ringside, most of the time, too. However many of these ponies were such a joy to watch anyway. Did not really get the chance to do much ring riding until my teens with my lovely Misty who was by the amazing Bwlch Valentino who sired many a beautiful show pony of that day! Would be lovely to see some pics of famous stallions on 70's and 80's. I could name a couple, Vean thingyalorum and Gaulden Gamethingy. I sent my lovely chicky to Sandbourbe Royal Ensingn, a truly beautiful stallion. Any pics???

I would love some of the old year books too, unfortunately when my parents divorced years ago they kind of got chucked away which is a massive shame as I used to adore flicking through them imagining I owned some of those wonderful ponies.
They would make a killing if they re-printed them and the market is there for it too.

Just as an after thought, would these ponies hold their own in the show ring today?

Quote '1950 Mr A Deptford with Pretty Polly (14hds by Naseel) 1951 Mr A Deptford with Pretty Polly' Didn't Mr Deptford own Gem's Signet (sire or grandsire of Holly of Spring?) - I seem to remember reading somewhere, in the dim and distant past, that when he advertised him at stud he only had four mares booked to him and, therefore, had him gelded.

Holly of Spring was by Gems Signet, who was indeed gelded and then went on to win at HOYS. Signet was by Bwlch Hill Wind who also sired Rosevean Eagles Hill, Glenfield Hill Cottage and Trellech Giselle.
