I agree too!!! The "old" ponies went far more freely and in a beautiful natural outline not with thier heads hauled in Ponies were not overweight either and as a result looked far more elegant than most of todays over weight ponies!!!! Wonder when and why it all started to change................ More pics please!!!!

(/quote) What has struck me most about seeing these old pics again is the contrast between how they were ridden then and what we see today. In so many current day pics the ponies heads are hauled in with ridiculously tight short reins and horizontal curbs, with riders looking like they're literally hanging on the reins to balance. In contrast these ponies in the old pics are the very picture of elegance and an absolute joy to look at. I agree Lastchance. All these ponies look very elegant and very much individuals whereas a lot of ponies today have their heads fixed in a very strict (and often false, overbent outline) and you can see they have all been wearing the same training gear. The riders yesterday seemed happy to let their ponies pose with the horses' heads alert and standing more naturally and the riders' reins loose.[/quote] I agree completely with the above two quotes.

Fabulous thread! I have loads of old pony pics and the BSPS Yearbooks provided the inspiration for the Show Horse Annual. I could scan all night but here are a few- Lechlade Violet 13.2hh show pony ridden I think by Gill Sant (now Thompson) Line up of 14.2hh's at The Royal headed by Cusop Dignified followed by Runnings Park Hill Star, Stenigot Nightjar and Costessy Choristor? Keston Poldark 13.2hh pony by Minkino- lovely! Whalton Heavens Above, 14.2hh show pony who was a huge winner.

What lovely pictures and such quality ponies, in beautiful condition whilst not being unnaturally fat or 'over cooked'. Reminiscent of days sadly now past when people were true horsemen/women with skills passed down through generations and good sound, solid, common sense type horsemanship. Absolutely beautiful and a pleasure to see. Many thanks for sharing them with the rest of us.

Thought some of you on here might appreciate some of these pictures, that I have found whilst working for Richard Deptford Naseel (Grey, Pure Arab) and Gypsy Gold, sire and dam of the Famous Pretty Polly! The Famous 'Pretty Polly' In the 'Personality Parade' at HOYS aged 26! Pollyanna Holly of Spring Eureka (Full brother to Polly) Glide On (1/2 sister to Polly) My Pretty Maid Firefly, who was full TB and only 14.2!! I believe she raced too! Enoch Arden at Ponies of Britain Whalton Ragtime

Great photos and they bring back memories. As above, compared to ponies now, they were so much leaner and fitter looking.

Thank you for these! I remember a lot of them from my youth - such lovely ponies I had a 14.2 TB mare - bred to race but considered too small - she was my first pony!

Brilliant pics - thank you for posting them. How fit do those ponies look? Is Richard Deptford the son of Albert (?) Deptford who owned Gems Signet?

Yes, Richard is Albert Deptfords son, he carries on the Gems prefix with a few show ponies, all going back to Polly! But he mainly breeds Welsh ponies and cobs, under the Gems banner these days

My favourite ever pony we owned was a Gems pony - he had the kindest most loving nature of any animal we've had before or since I still miss him now almost 25yrs later! Gems Pebble, beautiful rocking horse dapple grey 14.2 who sadly broke his leg way before his time was due.

Amazing pictures - not just the weight issue that has changed though! Look at the length of the riders stirrups compared to today's racing style! and obviously the dress code fashions have changed!

Loved seeing the pics as they were such beautiful ponies . Think we have moved on with riders turnout but oh how I have to agree with the weight of the ponies. You can actually see they are beautiful without being obese. How I wish we could get back to those days.

beautiful ponies you can see the frame without being skinny, much better than the overstuffed animals you see in the ring now!! lessons should be learned from these photo's

Not just the condition - these ponies have more bone too. It worries me how incredibly fine some children's riding ponies are now - for those ponies that don't make it as show ponies, it really limits their options to go on as general allrounders, as ordinary buyers are (perhaps rightly) concerned about the lack of bone

Love them, my riding position is exactly the same, my mother still tells me i ride like an old hunts man lol. Some beautiful ponies in the pics though. In a way its a shame you dont see many like this anymore times have changes so much.
