How absolutely wonderful!! I've really enjoyed going back in time and admiring all these lovely animals. I can remember going to the Richmond Royal Horse Show (on my bike) and falling in love with all the Catherston ponies, Kavora Mr Chips, Cribban Biddy Bronze, Second Thoughts and Babycham. Does anyone on here have memories of the last two? I adored Babycham so much that I named my first home-bred dun hunter pony 'Babycham'. I really believe that today's producers and riders could benefit from seeing how ponies were ridden in those days. Nowadays its: hands on knees with knuckles horizontal; elbows out; 2" gap between knees and flap; bottoms on the back of the saddle and heels forever digging in with toes appearing to be permanently pointing downwards. Many of todays top ponies seem overbent even when ridden on a loosish rein. Is this achieved by tying them down when in the stable?

I too have noticed this thing with the hands turned towards each other and elbows sticking out, I thought I had missed something as I was always taught, drummed into me , that you had your thumbs on top. Love this old pictures, they are fab .x

As a child, many years ago, I was taught:
Your head and your heart hold high; Your hands and your heels hold low; Your knees keep close to your horse's sides - Your elbows close to your own. ;D

Wow, thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread, its amazing to look back through these photos. I noticed quite a few familiar names that crop up in my show ponies breeding, he's what I would class as a more 'old fashioned' type and when put in the condition ponies need now to succeed in the show ring-suffered with laminitis. He simply isn't bred to carry that sort of false condition. Does anybody have any more pictures of yesteryears welshes? Would be very interested to see those.

We also had: Greenacres Thimble - huge winner FR and LR Pendley Soubrette - Won RIHS 13.2 Highlight - Small hack winner HOYS Rookery Jigsaw - WHP champion Peterborough 1977 I was also very lucky to ride Gem Signet in his older years I will have to get out all the old photo albumns and post some picture on here.

Brilliant, I'll look forward to seeing them all. If Soubrette went to a family in Cornwall in 1982 then I remember that pony.

I have so enjoyed looking at these pics of these absolutely stunning ponies some of which I remember very well. I was mesmerised by Lechlade Violet and of course "the pink pony" which was quite extraordinary in those days as a roan pony was indeed a phenomenon in a pony world dominated by just plain colours. She went on to prove that a good horse is never a bad colour! What a pony! I hate all the bling of today as i think it detracts from the elegance of the pony and rider combination and certainly many children today would find it so difficult to ride on a straight cut half panel saddle. Isn't it also great to see ponies well covered with beautiful outlines but NOT obese. Producers and judges please note ! Oh and by the way Thimble, it was your Lr. Greenacres Thimble along with Rotherwood Snap Happy which made me fall in love with dun ponies. Living in Hertfordshire at the time, didn't you also drive Rookery Jigsaw ? Fabulous pictures, really enjoyed reading this thread . . thank you.

Yes we did drive Rookery Jigsaw and Greenacres Thimble in their retirement years. They loved still having a job to do. Fontley Arabasque went on to be a top broodmare. I still adore dun ponies. They say you never get a bad Dun !!

Thank you so much to all who've posted pics on here. A truly pleasurable stroll down Memory Lane for me! I remember most of these ponies from my childhood & used to read Pony magazine over & over instead of doing my homework! Caroline Akrill's editorial about the day spent with the Gilbert-Scott's was a great favourite.
Today's ponies seem to be lacking in true 'pony-ness' & bone. There are many chubby, overbent little horses that've been primped & preened to American standards. I don't like the ridiculous browbands or hair ribbons, &, however uncomfortable the older saddles were, children at least looked like they were part of the pony instead of being perched on a cushion above it.
I wish Judges would have the courage to put some of these animals down the line, but I can understand it could prove unpopular with exhibitors.
Does anyone know what became of Daldorn Charmagne (think she was Suffolk-owned)?

Ahhh I've spent like the past hour pouring over these pictures :') I know perhaps one or two names..course never saw them as they were all before me :L But how lovley to see all these beautiful ponies of the past...they look ten times better than the vast majority of ponies out today. They look fit and healthy, unlike the obease and fat animals which are shown nowadays.. heads not hauled in, going correctly..ahh this made for such lovley reading and viewing Plus, its nice to see show ponies which actually had some bone! Lol almost think if Kestral was about a few decades ago, may have done quite well as a show pony! But seriously..thankyou RPJ + everyone else for letting a younger generation see some truly beautiful show animals of the past Particularly love Cratfield Bobby Dazzles and Shalbourne Last Waltz xxxxxxx

Wow loved looking at these photos! The 128cm show ponies are my favourite: they didn't look like 'overgrown first riddens' with tiny jockies on but fabulous stunning blood ponies, with a bit of bone! Just thought I'd share a picture of Nantcol Lady Penelope as a 4 year old. We were fortunate to have been the first people to have her under saddle. My sister rode her as a 4 year old (my sister was 4 too!) & she has gone on to be really successful! Back in 2001: (okay not ages away but this pony is STILL showing at top level!)
