Sadler's Wells died peacefully in his paddock at his life long home of Coolmore today aged 30.
This horse started off my love affair with the breeding side of TB's.
He truly was one of the greatest racehorses of all time. By Northern Dancer out of Fairy Bridge, Sadler's Wells won 6 races and over £400k in prize money. He was Champion 3yo in France. He may not have won the glory of the likes of Sea The Stars on the track but he has eclipsed them all in the sire ratings! 14 years he stood champion sire in Britain and Ireland. His off spring have won Group 1 races at every distance world wide. But his talents didn't just lie in breeding flat horses. He sired some fantastic jumpers to.
Many of his best flat horses have turned into well respected sires and broodmares. Arguably his most famous jumping son was Istabraq. Though he sired many, many more top class performers.
Not only was Sadler's Wells a fantastic sire he was a Sire of Sires. His stallions are standing at stud for phenominal fees. Montjeu, Galileo, In The Wings, Old Vic, Kayf Tara, Milian, King's Theatre, Refuse To Bend, High Chaperal, Saddler's Hall to name just a small few. He was also equally in high demand as a broodmare sire.
He started a dynasty that is still progressing today. It is rumoured that at one stage his stud fee exceeded £200k and was strictly invite only.
The one distinctive thing that you will always notice is that a vast majority of racehorses that have white on their faces or on their legs somewhere will have Sadler's Wells as either a Sire, Grand Sire or Great Grand Sire - he liked to make his stock known!
Sadler's Wells was most certainly one of a kind. He leaves behind a phenominal legacy that I think will be nigh on impossible to match, let alone exceed.
RIP Old Man. You have made the world a much, much brighter and better place just for your existance.
