HelenE - beautiful turnout! What show was that? Barry Barker (lorry behind) was local to us? Hi, thank you for your nice comment, he was my horse of a lifetime and I miss him every day. The photo was taken at Edenbridge and Oxted show. I donated a trophy for this class in his memory (Nettlestead Baron Memorial Shield), and presented it to the first winner in 2009. Last year, my friend and I took her horse to compete in the class, and joked that wouldn't it be great to win Barons trophy etc etc. Well, that trophy is currently sitting in my living room! We won the class, and both burst in to tears as Baron has been such a big part in both of our lives. Here is me driving the Large Brown Thing as he is affectionately known, winning the class last year and getting to take Barons trophy home..... and the same horse and me again....

Thank you drear for your invitation, and I am pleased you like the photo's, and if you are ever in mid western France do come and see us. I was very much involved with working horses and ponies in the 1980's and worked with Charlie Pinney and went to the conference on the working horse in the future at Shotover which was the publication of Keith Chivers book History with a Future; I of course spoke about the small draught horse like the Fell, Dales, and wished Charlie would make some of his horse drawn implement's for smaller cobs and working ponies, then owners could do some field work like chain harrowing their paddocks.

Sorry drea I did a spell check on my last email, and it thought you should have a "r" on the end !!!! and didn't check it again. Helen E you and your friend have a very elegant turnout, can I ask you why you used brown harness with a black vehicle, was it to go with your brown upholstery?

globetrotter, ive pm you about working fells in jedbrough i think you'l like it, my other half was a friend of charlie pinney they spent many a night on the phone, my OH makes his own farm equipment now as you cant buy, in this country, we did import a plough from ohio in america last year but mabey the equipment they make for quad bikes would suit for the smaller horse but it would need to be converted to horse drawn, im loving the pic's thats are getting put on

Always a pleasing view, driving a pair of my Fell mares. A picture from the past, my late Fell mare Peggy who i did some much with over 20 years together. 1982. Fell mare Merry - FPS Breed Show.

I drive my Section A Ceulan bred gelding and both he and I love it!!! I ride as a job and driving is my hobby!! Freinds say I have "driving face" when out and about (by this they mean a stupid grin plastered allover my chops) but I can't help it, it is just so much fun!
I had 3 small ponies, collected through various means and broke them all very easily to harness and cart. Mainly because I didn't have riders for them. Ceulan Monti, Section A, has been sold as a show pony now, but he was easy to break, walking and trotting around the village, lanes and fields within 2 days. Wendbarry Hocus Pocus has been sold as a 122cm show pony, but he was even easier to break, taking to it and after an hour was around the village, lanes and fields, walk and trot!
I broke them all myself, after having one lesson on fitting a harness from a friend and reading a book BUT I will say that I had owned my ponies since weaning, had broken them all to saddle and rider first and therfore they had already been led out around the lanes, met cars, buses, lorries, heard cows running in the fields etc, also they had been long reined and lunged extensively and used to voice commands, and they knew me inside out. (and I am a confident horse person)
I would recommend diving to everyone, it is sooooooooo much fun. Thinking about it makes me Giggle.

I managed to get a little exercise cart second hand from carriage link for £300, nothing flash, but it did us for what we wanted, my leather harness was a present (lucky me!) I think the synthetic harness's are around £100 (depending on size obviously!!!!) but there is always second hand carts and harnesses for sale. Also try dragon driving, loads of adverts!!!!
I would have loved to have taken my pony to do driving trials, it looks such good fun :-)

I drive several times a week with a local RDA group. I can well recommend it as a great way to go for people who cannot for some reason run their own turnout.

Hi, I used to drive my sec b until I retired him (hes 21 but he thinks he's 4) and I'm just starting to break my sec c 4 year old to drive. If you are in warwickshire, have a ook at my driving clubs website www.westmidlandsdrivinggroup.co.uk on the contacts page is the no for the bds they will give you details of local people who break/drive in your area. Alternatively you could come to one of our events. we do driving trials and come and meet us. Its a Berkswell common rugby club on sunday may 29th.

What beautiful photos Helen E you must be very proud. As a complete novice to driving and further to the query regarding the colour of harness, could you please enlighten me with which colour of harness to which vehicle. Also just like to say wish I had done this years ago and would recommend it to anyone with a much loved outgrown pony.

Hi mabmab70, the correct colour of harness to the vehicle is brown harness with a varnished natural wood vehicle, and black harness with all painted vehicles. Whatever the colour of the harness the reins are brown.

iIused to drive my gypsy cob. She was a right monkey to ride but absolutely perfect when driven. I enjoyed doing it. I am going to break my daughters section b to drive once she has outgrown him so he always has something to do as i really don't want to sell him on ever. She can't wait to drive him so i might start with him soon and then she can either ride or drive him depending on how she feels.

I took to driving after serious back problems- forced to give up competitive riding. I loved it right away, never looked back. I now have 5 welsh a's - clever, brave and more than enough stamina. I drive them single, team, pairs and 4 of them are also ridden (by my very tiny groom) and one of them is also in eventing competition. We keep them busy and fit ! Video can be seen on the 'picture' post
