>:(I was so angry at the weekend went to an affiliated show and came across the most obnoxious judge i have ever had the misfortune to send my daughter and her pony into the ring under, he watched hardly any of her show, turned and spoke to the steward as she was trotting back towards him, he missed the most part of her canter as he was busy chatting with steward and looking at the line up, my daughter did her salute and he didn't even indicate a thank you to her instead he turned to the line up and asked them to remove saddles, was really angry at this but didn't realise the worst was yet to come!!! My daughter stood her pony infront of him, he didn't even look at them and indicated to her to walk away, as she trotted past him and the steward he turned to the steward, pulled his tongue out and screwed up his face, as if he was about to say 'eugh' i was gobsmaked to say the least, i have never come across such a horrible judge before in my life, the pony in question has done extremely well so far this season and really exceeded our expectations, i totally accept that he may not like the pony and understand you take that chance when you enter the class, but to behave like that in a childrens first ridden class to me is just totally unacceptable, i am so close to putting in a formal complaint to the society. I am just lucky that my little girl had no idea what had gone on, and i wish i hadn't bothered putting the saddle back on and just walked out of the ring

Funnily enough we came across an obnoxious judge on saturday in Lancashire, but it was a lady whose comment to my daughter could well of upset a more fragile child..... we show our sp in a tom thumb with 2 reins as she feels happy in it , we went to winter champs with no repurcussions (SP) and yet when my daughter went out to do her conformation on saturday the judge said to Georgia "what on earth have you got in its mouth" To add insult to injury the class winner had the same bit in with a curb chain I was not impressed, the judges need to think before they comment to children as they are really impressionable and can easily be affected....

Flashter i do think that you should write a letter as the societies will have no idea about this kind of behaviour if they are not informed. Behaviour like this needs to be stamped out before this bad apple tars the whole society judges with the same brush. i do agree he sounded like an obnoxious judge.

I am so fed up with judges face fitting its become a laugh you can pick out winners by just whos going not the ponies thats why they dont even bother to watch already picked out winners before they come in the ring or show come to that matter .All the effort people go to and pay out they should be in with the same chance as everyone not if your face fits or that judge is showing under that judge next wk so better put them first wish people would get judges out of the area for the smaller show it might help.

Last year I wrote to Ponies UK, as I had been in a PUK M&M open small breeds, and a judge allowed two plaited show ponies to compete in the class! (they weren't mountain and moorlands). The judge carried on with the class, without questioning it and then she placed them! Both show ponies were placed above my native pony! I was absolutely disgusted, the judge clearly acted like she had done nothing wrong and the competitors on the show ponies had no clue either! I wrote to Ponies UK explaining what had happened and how they had got the qualification, and how the judge had broken the rules set out by PUK themselves. But suprise suprise Ponies UK NEVER wrote back to me. I felt it was very rude on their behalf, and they clearly had no interest in rules being broken. Made me loose alot of faith in the society personally.

i was told i was in the rong class the other week so i knew i wouldnt get place on my chunky girly. However i carried on and as i cam to do my trot towards the judge she had already pulled out te next rider on her big hunter (which she clearly knew as she was talking away 2 her) i had to trot round the girl! then when i came to gallop she shook her head, this i may add was the only bit of the show she really watched. Then when i walked down the center to salute she wasnt even watching ! it was really embarasing. I got 3rd out of 3, no supprise to who the winner was and the judge said to me when i got my ribbon, "your horse is very "bucky farty" and you shouldnt really have been placed!. i was gob smacked. it was her first show inside and the other two were better than me yes, however i am only 18 and only usually show in hand, it was a big thing for me to ride in the class and that just topped it off !

"your horse is very "bucky farty" Sorry Spitfire I know I shouldn't laugh but that tickled me. Not laughing at your expense just that a judge would come out with such a ridiculous comment! Honestly some should just learn to keep their mouths shut

we had the same thing yesterday at a show,my son had took his new pony to do in-hand the judge didnt watch him run him out or anything, just turned his back, never even spoke to the poor kid, when it came to placing he gave him a rossette and then left him stood there while he went and had a good old chin wag with 1st place, the steward had to go over to him and walk him out, there was no lap of honour or anything,he was just made to turn round and walk out,i was so mad that he came out the ring up-set,i understand that they might not like your pony but there doing a job,we have all paid our entries and travelled to the show, manners cost nothing i for one will never ever put my son in his class ever again !!!!

On the flip side I had a judge yesterday that, ok he was 10mins late for the class, but he did appologise profusely and proceeded to watch every move every horse made. He was dodging jumps, spinning around like a spinning top and spent every second watching his horses. When horses were brought infront of him he was very polite, had a good look and again watched everything. When he was riding them he asked permission to get on them first and seeing as they were ex-racers he gave each one a walk, a trot around most of the edge of the ring to settle them to a new rider before carrying on to ride a show on them. and he rode each one beautifully. Handing out the rossettes he had a good word for everybody and again he watched everyone on the laps of honour. There are some very good judges out there or maybe this one just didn't like his stewards so spent as much time as possible ignoring and avoiding them

This thread has really shocked me. How dare somebody be so obnoxious to a child. Do they think they are better than the rest therefore don't have to use manners and be polite! Luckily i have never had a judge like this and i honestly don't know what i'd do if i did. I'm very glad your child didn't know anything about it. Get his name and don't even bother wasting your time and money on him again. Keep it up x

I think I would have a polite word with the judge outside the ring and remind him that people often travel fair distance and pay a good fee to be judged by him and if he does not wish to do this then perhaps he shouldn't and regardless of the class or the venue he should be professional in all ways, also that courtesy costs nothing and an encouraging word can go a long way especially with children, then I would also go to the show committee and complain. I hasten to add by polite word I do mean polite. There really isn't any excuse for this type of behavior.

I was called in last on my mare - ok, I accept she has does not have the 'look at me' prescence necessary for the show ring. In the in=hand section the judge gave her the most cursory of glances and when I trotted back towards him he had his back to me and was chatting to his steward. As I went pass I wanted to wave my arm and shout 'over here'. I wished I had now on reflection. The rosettes went down to 6th place and I was 7th (last). He talked to the competitors as he gave out the rosettes but did not even acknowledge me. I could see the steward was embarassed on his behalf and he came over and said thank you which saved my day as I could feel myself close to tears (I was quite young then). Recently I watched an in-hand coloured class - at least 15 exhibits in it. At the end the judge went down the line and had (what seemed like) a 2 minute chat with every competitor. Very boring to watch (and I bet the organisers were going mad) but what a nice, thoughtful judge. So there are good ones and bad ones out there.

we had a judge a couple of weeks back.....(in the lead rein and in hand classes for my 7 year old daughter) this was only her 2nd ever show. JUDGES COMMENTS WHERE. you need to tie some knotts in those reins i could hang my knickers out for a week on them. and you need to slow your show down.!! our daughter rode great and you could see she was in full control of her pony .....what got 2nd place? a lead rein where the rider had no control and just bounced in the saddle in trot also the lead rein was clipped straight to the bit ...

I despise judges that pay no attention to each individual and just focus on there winner. I had a judge a couple of weeks back just at local level who placed 2 part bred general cob types (nothing wrong with general cob types i have one myself but this was a class for purebred m&m) further up the line than Me and another girl on a beautiful section D. Fair enough my pony wrong legged once but i corrected it and as far as i was aware the other sec D did a perfect show. And reading in other posts i have noticed that breed type etc come before ''blips''

I think I should have posted here. I entered my daughter in a class weeks ahead as there were a few classes she wanted to enter and as we know it is cheaper. However, on the day it was apparent the judge had been invited especially as he had ridden one of the committee's horses at a county show and gone supreme. Guess whose horse won the class on the day and supreme. We think he heard rumblings as he made a hasty exit from the showground once his judging was finished. Whereby normally on other shows I have seen him at he hangs around. I wondered if this was breaking the rules of the judging panels.

Oh had me in stitches... reminds me of a situation I was in recently!! While judging at a very novice unaffilliated show I spotted the "big guns" at the side of the ring all laughing at the competitors and their ponies... hows that for bleeding obnoxious!!! To be fair the "big guns" are only self titled and are not seen out doing alot with their own horses! However, I know all societies are different in their rules but there is a time span of a year/two years for the connection between judge and competitor isnt there?

i hate judges like this ... i went to a show the other week and the judge just did not even watch 10 seconds of my show she turned to the steward and talked to her with her back to me the whole way through i was veryyyyyy angry ... he didnt go too brilliantly on the go round due to him being 4 and it was his first time in doors he didnt do anything naughty just very much on his toes puffing and going way too fast and he was quite naughty in the line up so she clearly thought no matter how good his show was she wasnt prepared to place him and it was veryyyy annoying because he came out and did a fantastic show really redeemed himself grrrrrrr

Its amazing what we all 'wish we had done' after the event. I went under a very rude VHS judge a while back and she watched the first 3 individual shows then proceeded to spend the rest of the time looking at her mark sheet with her steward. I noticed this on the 2 individual shows before mine (I was last but hey ho) and still I didn't say anything. To this day I wish I had just stopped in the middle of my show and demanded her attention......I also wonder just how long I could have stopped for before she noticed!! Its sickening when we all pay good money to be judged. Ok, so we may not be what the judge is looking for, but at least have the decency to give us your attention for a few minutes.

Dreadful. I was just thinking though, wouldn't it be good to have a thread of all the judges highlighting the comments/actions from competitors that drive them mad. Maybe it would be good to see the other side.

this season, was my first full season of ridden flat classes as I used to do whp, and I have had my eyes opened to a different world of judging (or so it seems) I've lost count of the number of times my pony hasn't been watched during his show because he's a novice pony trying to move into open classes. But at my local county show about a month ago I had the rudest judging I've ever had - it was the inhand m&m class and there were only 6 of us in the class and the judge pulled the other 5 in to the line up for final placings then just turned her back on me left me walking round the ring, so I just assumed that I was to put myself on the end!! on discussion with friends after (one of whom is a judge herself), I discovered said judge wasn't even on a panel. but oh well I just see it as we all have the same problems, so if it wasn't me it would be someone else being ignored
