Hell- I think my riding club is cheep then. My membership is £7 for juniors and £10 for adults. Entry fees for members is £3 and £4 for non members. As i am a newish riding club, I need the support to get started. Its a shame as local riding clubs are in decline and its really importanty that we support them before they go. West Craven rc is a lovely riding club and is run by a lovely set of people.

Unfortunately over heads are difficult by the time you pay to hire the ground the one we use has upped the price to almost £400 and then judges if you want panel ones they travel quite a long way, often have to have accommodation and then rosettes have gone up in price as well i can't afford to do a class for less than £10 per person but we do offer a cost of £6 if you do pre-entries as it does help on the day - we could make every one pre-enter put suspect quite a few would not then turn up - at our show you only have to make 1 pre-entry and the rest of the day any other classes are £6 as well.. Its not easy running shows today and i think competitors do not realise what the costs are

The last time I ran the novelty ring for a riding club we had sponsership for the ring, the sponser who wasn't horsesy and knew no one judged it and because the ring was so full we took entries at the ringside at £2. The venue was a large equestrian centre and the hire of it was a lot but the club still made £1500 These classes I always think are to make children who perhaps do not have the perfect pony happy. Its my favorite ring and its lovely to see children who wold never compete in other classes have some fun and hopefully get a rossette, which they are so proud of. Our local riding club tends to use outside judges for this, the last ones showed dogs and were impressed at the time and trouble the entrants had taken to get ready.

I run a local riding club and I must say some of these clubs now are taking the mickey charging for car parking - anything between £1.00 and £3.00 depending on where it is. We often pop along to watch friends if we are not out anywhere with our ponies.
At our club we charge £5.00 oer class for members and £7.00 for non members (it only went up this year from £6.00 and was done to encourage people to join the club as last year our membership levels decreased quite a lot) This year our membership levels have risen again as we now have a FAB committee of people who give up lots of time to give something back - all our kids went through the club when they were younger.
I love running the club and we have kept the novelties at £10 for 3. We do charge for first aid £1.50 as first aid kits don't pay for themselves and often we have to pay for someone to cover the first aid position if I am busy. We like to take feedback from our members and try to change what is needed.
I would like to think that our club is improving and listening to our members in this really difficult finacial climate.
I'd say don't go to Silver Birch again - clearly not fair - come to our club we promise to make you feel really welcome!!

Local riding clubs for me are just used for babies or first time outers to get them used to the experience, one year a friend entered the mini jumping on her 12.2 pony, only a handful had gotten through to the jump off, and this pony was undoubtably the fastest in the class, one pony which went in prior to her TROTTED round the 'jump off' and as she exited was handed a 2nd place rosette... As you can imagine all spectators at the ringside were more than baffled at why this girl had been given the rosette when placings hadn't commenced yet, nor had the jump off even finished! The rosette was quickly handed back and the class was finished. My friends pony was the clear winner but ended up third, and then the girl who had accidentally been given the rosette in advance, came 2nd. This was about 3/4 years ago mind, but it's a clear example of how local shows can be fixed. I entered the same show about 2 years ago to get a novice pony out to her first ridden and working hunter class, and they were short on judges as it clashed with some county shows, so they were asking spectators if they would judge! Appalling if you ask me.

Wilpshire Riding Club is running FAMILY classes, we want to encourage families to have a day out at shows and enjoy it, we have very good judges and a very loyal committee, our entry fees are £3.00 for members and £5.00 non members, we are not in it to make a profit but need to cover costs. Our shows are held in Darwen, EVERYONE welcome. AND OUR SHOWS ARE TROPHY SOWS

Emma-Jane has put across the valid point of view about overheads and such like. I have been organising shows longer than I care to remember and absolutely love doing it. None of us lead a luxury life on the profits - truth is we struggle to break even at some of the shows. At the end of the day we try to award 'Quality' rosettes and trophies, provide fair and un-biased judges. We affiliate to Championship Events that also offer 'value for money' - All of this costs. We try to provide the best we can within the budget we have and thankfully we seem to attract exhibitors who come to enjoy our shows and I hope they all leave happy and with intentions to come back to our next show.
It is always nice to receive compliments but equally I would hope anyone who has a gripe about anything would feel comfortable in coming to us direct and mention anything that has spoiled their day, whatever it may be, then at least we can be aware and try to put things right if we can.
I'm sure some of the shows criticised above would prefer to be told personally rather than read about it like this. A serious amount of time and effort, usually voluntary, goes into organising these shows, and as things (Financial & Legal) get tighter, the organisers really have no other option but to charge such fees as is necessary just to keep going!
Sorry to harp on a bit but just my opinion. Like someone above has said - you choose to go where you want to go at the end of the day. I hope everyone has a fabulous show season wherever they choose to compete.
p.s. I've got to comment on 'sectiondcrazy' love your signature montage!!!!

I went to Silver Birch Show 29th May & have a few moans... firstly class fees... for a local show I was shocked at the entry fees, we were going into 2 showing classes & the novelties & the total was.... £70!!!!!!!!! I was absolutely shocked & quickly cancelled most of the entries into the novelties - it was £10 per class & £6 per novelty (for none members) & £2 for first aid fee... Maybe this is is 'normal rates' but for 2 show classes & novelties I didnt expect it to be £70... It was very slightly cheaper to become a member (not that we will ever be going back!) Next the actual classes... the Shetland class was won by a pony that was placed in the miniature class.. the miniature class said it excluded shetlands so how could it be placed in both classes, I did ask the steward in the shetland class but she ignored me & walked off... I wasnt being agressive just enquired on the rules. Lastly the novelties were won seemingly by the judges friends children who she was chatting to outside the ring & the young handler class was actually won by a child who didnt even lead her pony! Her parent lead the pony & the child just walked on the other side of them away from the pony! It was a shame for my daughter as she tried really hard & didnt even get a look in, (not saying she should of won but to be beat by an adult in the young handler class seems corrupt?!) we stayed all day in the rain & it seemed a complete waste of time - she was so disheartened that we didnt even stay for the last class wasting £10! Anyway sorry for the moan, just wanted to get it out of my system as not been to any other shows where have felt like this!

I have been helping to run silverbirch horse show since it began none of the committees children compete as there are only 4 on the committee me being one(like weve got time to get the ponys ready as well as run the show). As for the prices it is expensive to run a show cost of ground rent, decent rosettes which we like to give out, trophys for annual show, trophys for presentation, caravan for booking in (they dont last forever)first aid, toilet rental, ropes, stakes, ring numbers, tannoy system, judges fees, stewards fees, need i go on they all cost money. This is regarding the "Shetland" winning the miniature horse class, then going into the Shetland class and also winning that. It was a foal that was entered into the miniature horse class. He is actually a registered British Spotted Miniature Horse and has a passport to prove it. I'm very goo friends with the people who own the mare and foal and have seen the passport. On the day in question, I was in the same class as them and he came last out f 6. Also, at the time the foal was only 1 month old and therefore his mother had to come into the class with him. The MOTHER then entered the Shetland class and won it which she has previously won at county level anyway.

Toptrout, Know exactly what you mean, earlier in the season we entered shiniest coat (£6) Our L/R Showpony (coat gleaming) was against 2 very woollie section A`s. We came third. And although this is a novelty class at £6 you expect to be judged fairly. We could even hear comments from outside the ring, about how ridiculous the placings where. Just is not fair on the Kiddies. We entered the Longest Tail novelty, on an Exmoor whose tail drags along the floor, its that long. It was won by an immaculate, shiny Sec B whose tail barely reached its fetlocks.... Mentioned to a steward in passing afterwards, and she just said "that pony wins every time, because its immaculate." Well, immaculate it may be, but on that day it did not have the longest tail!! We only entered because we thought my son would be a shoo in, after a bad day in the ridden showing when his pony wouldn't canter!!! £6 wasted on that one too.
