Why have they/want to return it? Behaviour? Or have they just decided they dont want it anymore?

I used to breed siamese cats and had a kitten returned, it brought a virus with it and I lost the whole of the litter- so be warned... it was heartbreaking.

If you have the puppy back i would suggest that you tell the owner that you will refund some money after expenses ie re advertising food etc, that is assuming there is no fault with the pup just someone who has changed their mind

trade and standards cover this an agreement of 7 or 14 days is usually the time breeders agree on the return of a puppy, however good breeders will have a puppy back, to rehome at a cost to the first buyer say 25-50% to cover costs of keep advertsing and rehoming etc., however if the puppy becomes in within a certain time or dies then the breeder is held accountable. good luck why are they returning it.

It would depend why they are returning it...If it is unhealthy in mind, body or temperament then I would say a refund is in order.
If they have changed their mind I wouldnt mention a refund unless they do....if they do broach the subject I would say I will make a partial refund only once the puppy has been rehomed again, and that they will need to cover keep and advertising costs until then.

When we bought our puppy we had to sign an agreement with the breeder, that if for any reason we could not keep him we would return him to the breeder.
I would obviously ask reasons why they need to return the puppy, but as above i think depending on how long they've had the puppy / the cost of re homing would depend on how much of a refund they would receive.

I would rather have the puppy returned then end up with it going to unsuitable owner, I always have to vet anyone who buys from us (not like we sell much) and try to ensure a home for life, good luck I hope the puppy will be in good health etc when it's returned x

They had him for 1!!! yes 1 night. He is perfectly healthy, vet checked, insured etc. They just said that they didnt think he would fit in with their family life. They came to see him 4 times, came recomended from a friend etc. He has been back with us for nearly a week and is a super happy clean little man. I would rather give him to a suitable family than sell him again to the wrong home, ive only had calls from the latter since! When they droped him off they just handed him over ,said sorry and walked off?

That is awful! poor little man I'm afraid I wouldn't refund at all....it's no fault of yours and people like that shouldn't expect you to either just because they changed their minds after 1 Night !!! Didn't give the little fella a chance.....but luckily he's back with you and you can find him a lovely new home ....he sounds adorable.

Some folks!
I think the writing was on the wall when they had to come back four times to make up their minds.
That seems to me over the top and very unnecessary.
Time wasters, and the puppy is better off without them!

I like people to come and see their puppies as then when they leave me its not to a total stranger, as long as it's convenient they can come as often as they like.

That what I thought at the time, he can saty untill the right home comes of course, but all his brother & sisters have gone and his mum is now not to keen He is a great little dog, and I know the right home is waiting for him

With cat breeders they will always put a contract in place that the cat/kitten be returned to them to be rehomed and then they will get their money back minus advertising costs as finding the right home is more important.

How sad. Poor little mite. I breed and also use the KC accredited breeders contract. In this case I would not refund. The contract states they have 14 days to get the puppy checked by a vet and only a refund will be given if there is a serious medical condition. Trading standards does not really affect puppy selling
I would be furious as I am sure you could have sold the pup elsewhere. No refund, it might teach them a lesson not to be so flippant in the future.
I have been lucky as I have ever only had 1 pup returned for very genuine reasons and he is still with me.
Really hope you find a perfect home for the baby

I would not refund and NOT give the pup back, what rights do they have, total idiots. as OP said maybe then they will think twice before doing the same to another poor little animal xxxx

No more puppy breeding for me, am banned by the oh!! Its perhaps as well as I worry so much about them. p.s. puppy seems fine in his new home, and not heard a thing from the others, so the money is sitting in my bank and I am not getting in touch with them!

you are not obliged to return the money. better they return the pup to you rather than neglect him, i often take back ponies ive bred for that very reason. so glad he got a good home now.

intresting thread , yes i agree that some people are pure idiots but when i have a litter of puppies i would always want to know that they are in a secure and caring home , the money issue to me is always second ,the animals welfare would always come before arguing over money , maybe thats why im not ever going to be rich !!
i was told at a horse show a few weeks back to take this pony from his breeder try him and his words to me was dont worry about how much im looking for a good home again the money is a second issue thats the sort of breeder i am and he is , the home is everything

Dont get me wrong, the most important thing is the puppy. I put loads of time into looking after the pups from day 1 and its so great to see them go to super, forever loving homes. I just wanted to know where I stood and I have no intention of getting in touch with his old owners, I just cannot belive I got them so wrong.
