Oooh, been there done that!!! Do you have any long tweezers, the kind that have the long pointy ends? Or do you have any frontline spray?

hi, assume your lilian is a horse! we get lots of ticks round here and i find they come out of the horses and dogs really easily with a firm pinch round the head and a twisting action. on humans it is best to smother them in vaseline or sudocrem or something equally thick and non absorbent, then within a day or so they die and drop off and don't leave an itchy patch.

you need a tick remover.... do not.. cover it in vaseline, pull it out, stub a lit cigarette, or do anything else with it.. better to leave it there, then seek help when shops are open.. either a good pet shop or a vet, if you can't do it yourself.. If you leave it's head/legs in you risk that part of it becoming infected, which will inturn lead the infection in to the dogs bloodstream, if you try to cover it with vaseline and suffocate it, you run the risk of it regurgitating it's stomach contents back into the dog, causing infection and other nasties.
with the tick remover you slide it onto the pest and slowly twist and turn the thing til it pops it's head out, then get rid of it... down the loo, in the open fire... whatever, just dont let go or it will jump back on to the dog.
the remover is a small piece of plastic with a curved end, which is split, you get the tick in the split, side on and then begin to turn

if you stub a cigeret ( as you can tell by the spelling i dont smoke) out on top of the tick it then just falls off. People i know have used this method on a dog & it worked but just be carefull not to burn the horses ear.

DO NOT smother the tick in anything or try to burn it off. If you stress the tick, it will regurgitate back into your dog, and any diseases will be transmitted into your dog.
You need a tick remover, the recommended one is called an 'O-Tom' Tick twister, you can get them off ebay, or a pair of long nose tweezers. You hold the tick by the head, NOT the body, and you twist anti-clockwise. Or if you spray with frontline it will die and drop off.
If your dog has been treated with the frontline drops in the last four weeks, the tick will be killed by the frontline in your dogs system, if you can bear to just leave it alone.
If you can avoid trying to get it off, that's the best way, as if you leave the head in there it can become infected, or like me you can end up with a vet bill as a 'tick granuloma' can form which has to be surgically removed.

You need to buy frontline spray from your vet - the pet shops aren't licensed to sell it.

put some vodka on some cotton wool n hold it on the tick it should drop off good luck...........we do that on the dogs that come in to be groomed in it works !!!

Frontline can be bought in........................... Chemists.... as well as the vets bizarre but hey-ho mountside... if you did that on my dog at a groomers there would be no end of trouble, firstly you shouldn't have alcohol on a premises that isn't licensed to have it, and secondly how exactly does vodka work in a dogs grooming session? And just because it works, does not make it right?

And your stressed vodka soaked tick would regurgitate it's bloody dinner into the host dog, so let's hope there's no lymes disease in your area.

We have always done it as wiping is over with a alcohol (vodka is what we use), then pull it out in a twisting action and put it in some hot water. It's always worked for us. Never a problem! Hope it helps

Another vote for the green hooky thing! Ticks screw themselves in and have to be unscrewed back out again to be safe. Our saluki bit one off leaving the head in and ended up with a nasty infected hard spot, fortunately nothing worse but it took some getting rid of, ages before it was completely gone.

I always thought they dropped once they had finished feeding?? I'd get it off, wouldn't want the thing running round your house. I just bob mine into the vets and one of the nurses do it, I'm scared of getting it wrong and would rather pay for the piece of mind!

I think they do drop off when finished feeding, but they can stay on for days and days, or even die while they are "eating" then they just stay put.. they are horrible things, don't know what God was thinking when he made them.... Fleas are just as bad.

My dog had one recently under his chin, I kept him amused outside whilst hubby researched internet. After googling he watched a vid on you tube he came and told mewhat to do...... circle your finger around the tick on the dogs skin as fast as you can - I thought he was joking - did it for a while nothing then carried on bit more and eventually it did !! Apparently makes them dizzy and they open their mouths and jump off........could see it's teeth and everything - took bout 5mins before it gave up, but very rewarding and you know it's left nothing inside as it's jumped ship rather than being pulled out ;D

You must have very good eyesight to see its teeth - I have enough trouble seeing the head and waving legs, never mind teeth!
