I own a haflinger and i dont know whether it is just me not looking hard enough but NO WHERE seems to have a class for foreign breeds. Local shows, Qualifiers... i cant find any. Which leaves me class-less to be honest.. because he is chestnut so he cant enter a class for his colour, he is ridden in a pelham because he is incredibly strong so that puts equitation out of the equation and before he became a veteran i was left with nothing. Even with working hunter classes i struggle because it is regularly, plaited or M and M and he is consider as neither!! I'm at a loose end and i was wondering whether it was just me that seemed to struggle to find a class for my forward going foreign breed unless of course i am willing to pay a lot of money and go to a breeders show which wouldnt be easy for me because i dont always have available transport... Does anybody know what i can do or whether i can just class him as a large breed or sneak him into a M and M class.

Dorset/Hants have many shows with classes for foreign breeds.
Could you approach your local RC and ask if they would try putting on a Foreign Breeds class?
I was going to suggest classes like Family Pony, but if he is strong then perhaps something like Riding Club pony? Either that or just go to shows to enjoy yourself and not be concerned if you do a WH class that you may be below the plaited types.
Don't take him in an M&M class - he is not a Native pony of Great Britain.

Another class that you should be able to do at most shows is Best Turned Out and Best Conditioned (my local does it anyway) - sorry I know it's not much to go on I think that probably smaller shows tend to have more 'general' classes so I would go for those if you can.

Thanks (: i have tried riding club horse/pony but i have been told he isnt th right type because being a haflinger he has a lot of bone and muscle and he isnt what they are looking for.. my local show does one but i am regularly the ONLY competitor which gets boring because i do it to compete not to school which is basically what it is.. Thanks 'lozloz1' i will try them classes. 'loulabelle' i wish i could od that but his bit isnt dressage legal and i cant hunt him because he has had a tendon injury in the past and i couldnt risk it. Thank you for your suggestions (: keep them coming!

I share your pain! I can sneak into unusual coloured with my fjord, and now veteran, but there isn't much out there for us. One show I go to has a Pure bred class - for anything that isn't M&M - perhaps your local shows may run this as it would get more entries? I compete against all sorts, including TB's.

How about thinking from the other direction - what do you do with him? And any chance of changing the bit for something that is dressage legal?

Basically all varieties of snaffle for prelim and novice - which does not include wilkies which are not snaffles. Pictures are shown on the British Dressage website under rules - most unaffiliated competitions work to BD rules, but do check for RC/PC, they might be different and I'm out of date now.

I'm surprised at the comment about too much bone in RC Pony - most clubs are looking at temperament / manners / performance more than conformation in this class, and bone shouldn't come into it - my daughter competes in RC Pony at our RC on a Shetland or Welsh A.
In some ways smaller shows might give you more options - our club only has height breaks for ridden classes, not types, as we're too small to split into types.
I do know someone who plaits her Haflinger for WHP classes, where he does very well!

Yes I'd have thought that might be a possibility, surely a Haflinger could be an ideal RC mount for many members. I seem to remember our RC might have a cob type class too for the heavier ones, what about that?

I am surprised at that as this class at my local riding club is full of cobs and M&M with loads of bone and as long as they can jump there is no problem. If he is very strong and looks difficult to stop then that might be an issue but having lots of bone should not be! Some shows have "odd coloured" classes which include palominos, roans etc, I thought Haflingers had to have flaxen manes or tails I did not realise they could be chestnut. Our RC also has best rider classes and can enter on any horse or pony. Haflingers are always chestnut! And chestnuts often have flaxen manes and tails.

Seeing Haflingers in the Coloured Spotted and Palomino, or Odd Coloured classes is almost as bad as seeing them in the M&M classes! Because they tend to be a very soft chestnut with flaxen mane and tail they are often taken to be palominos, but they are all genetically chestnut ;D

Yep they are all chestnut, so i dont have a class for his colour, maybe i just came across a judge that didnt like him much when i got that comment in RC and will give it another go, i can only go and see so why not! I couldnt plait him, his mane is far too long and i couldnt bring myself to pull it, its my pride and joy when its clean and tidy (: he isnt to bad in his pelham but putting him in a snaffle has never turned out well, espicially when he is at a new location he reverts back to this bimbo horse and gets all caught up in himself that is the main issue, i dont think he looks difficult to stop. I know 'mellymoo'! i want a qualifier show to come by for that show! It looks fab (: i have plenty of classes to do there! Thanks people, i have a show on the 31st and i have 4 classes to do! Yeyy! thanks for you ideas they are appreciated

Foreign breed classes are all very well, but they are so up to the preference of the judge. I went in a FB class today. All the horses in the top 10 were just lovely. All represented their breed beautifully. However, the judge liked those horses that trotted at 100 miles an hour, with extravagent flashy paces, which a Halflinger hasnt Very hard class to judge and open to personal preference on breeds......

I will be helping with the Holderness Hunt summer Show based in East Yorkshire next year. I will definitely be suggesting various qualifiers and definitely be re arranging the schedule for them. xxx

I'm organising a little local show this year - it's been running for years but this year I have added a foreign breeds class (may be split into traditional and non-traditional dress in we get enough entries).
Search for 'Littlewick Horse Show' on facebook. We're in Berkshire near Maidenhead. It's just a local show but we've tried to make classes for everyone
