I know by living in the country surrounded by dairy farms i should expect flies, and do, but this year they are horrendous!! everywhere i look there are humping flies!! I have an electric wall mounted zapper but i am having to spray a fair few times a day as well! At night i have to shut all the windows and doors, empty a can of fly spray and go for a walk across the fields before coming back in and cleaning down before attempting to cook Is it just me or are they worse this year??

you can put up net curtains in the windows to at least contain them, and I suggest getting a cat, ours are wonderful fly catchers, don't even need our electric fly zapper anymore! alternately, I could post you the humoungous spiders from my shed to help? :-D

I don't think my 2 terriers would have a problem with a cat, but it wouldn't last long!! I counted 42 flies just in the kitchen last night, gross!!

I am a a homecarer and when I visited one elderly man last week there were around three hundred dead flies on the floor! The homecarer visiting the previous night had gone to the shop to get spray as she was shocked by the amount buzzing around! Dont know where they came from as there is nothing dead or stinking in the house (its kept very clean) the windows dont get opened much but the council vermin chap is coming today for a look as there are also ants everywhere.!

Thanks for the above tips, these things are disgusting. I have those sticky things on the windows that they get stuck on. I love listening to the buzzing as they die dreadfully slowly. Sorry, but I hate them that much.
Then there are those dots they leave everywhere on your paintwork etc., its either their sick or their poo.
Then last year! OMG last year! The bin was full (I swear I empty it regularly) and I went to empty and the plastic inner broke and all these maggots were over my kitchen floor. Do you realise how fast maggots can wriggle around and do you know nothing will kill the buggers, not even bleech. I had better shut up, but I hate, hate, hate the filthy things.

We are swamped with flies!!! I know we have a farm next door but as fast as you kill the darn things their relatives invade!! Doesn't seem to help much keeping the windows closed either. Oh well off on another killing spree.............. the third one today already.

I got one of those door streamer/curtain things to put up to stop birds flying into the kitchen. They work for flies as well, doesn't stop them entirely but numbers have been greatly reduced, maybe just the odd one each day. Normally we are swamped. Just looks like I might be telling people's fortunes as they are sparkly beads bought cheapo on ebay

I was going to offer the services of our cat too but see that someone already has. Our cats are thoroughly enjoying the flies this year, particularly as our neighbour decided to empty and clear out their lake - every living creepy crawly has crept and crawled our direction yuck.

We never used to have troubles with flies, as our son was spot on at zapping em with elastic bands. He never missed. Of course you had to clean the windows and the walls more often, but it was fascinating to watch him. I wonder if he puts that on his CV now he is a high ranking manager???
Of course we have flies now he lives abroad, but this year not so many problems with those little beggars that draw blood in the horses' ears. Do your others get that or is it just here on the Chase?

You may find you have cluser flies (google them). They will pick on one house in a road - and that is it - you can never totally get rid of them.. What you need to do is find out where they are breeding (usually in the loft on the south facing side) and get one of the electronic glue boards - these usually last about 6 months before you have to change the glue sheets and the flies get trapped on the glue sheets. This has sorted out the problemsI was having which involved 50-100 flies in my bedroom every day which was sending me crazy. I now have none at all - it is wonderful. The glue board also caught a mouse which was something the pest control people had never seen before. They tried the spray to start off with, but that was not enough for long term control. It is not a fly problem that can be controlled easily and if you end up with cluster flies, this method has worked well for me.

Old wives tale -- zip lock bag full of water and add a couple of pennies and attach to door. Apparantely keeps the flies from entering... not sure if it works but am going to give it a try!
