After stewarding today I am actually appalled at the turn out of some competitors!! Hair nets seem to have disappeared completely!! 12yr olds in long boots, top buttons on shirts undone, no gloves. I could carry on. Please please guys lets try and look our best in the ring, it really doest take much

I can't believe some people don't wear hairnets! Its just soooo scruffy!!!
Know where your coming from, stewarding opens your eyes I think.

No offence to anyone but you can pick up a hair net for 50p or so so there really is no excuse

My sister will not enter the ring with one hair out of place!!! We spend ages getting ready for the ring getting things tidy, & so you should: enjoy your time in the ring! ;D Think also though some of these people are newcomers to showing so maybe would be grateful for advice. But you can tell when someone's tried to make an effort but just doesn't know, & someone who simply can't be bothered!!!!!!

Oh dear, have people these days forgotten that the turnout of the rider is just important as the turnout of the pony/horse?

my pet hate is the white string on numbers and then tied in a big bow,we have a piece of thread that matches colour of jacket that also cost about 50p from local market

Oh preaching to the converted here!! I hate children in long boots - hair all over the place etc. I was judging recently in a Family Pony Class - the girl was 16 with pigtails - good grief!!!!

I don't know which show you were stewarding at but you do also have to remember that some of these riders have to start somewhere and are not always aware of what should or shouldn't be worn in the ring We all have to start somewhere .

I was watching a coloured ridden class at a show the other week, and one of the lady exhibitors was dressed as if she was about to do a gymkhana race, and was chewing gum, as said before, no one expects you to have the best 'branded' show clothes, but surely if you are entering even a local show, it's not that hard or expensive to turn yourself out smartly and appropriately for your chosen class, gloves and neat hair is a must, and definitely no gum chewing!!!!!

I have to agree with this, yes it does look better if riders are in 'correct' show gear but it's not the end of the world if they don't! all that matters is that they enjoy what they are doing and have fun.

I agree with that for local shows. However, chewing gum is out, that is a safety issue and judges/stewards should not allow it.

Everyone starts somewhere, and no having the correct gear when your just starting out isn't the be all and end all. That said correct gear or not, it costs nothing to pay a bit of attention to being neat and tidy. People with the best of everything forget this too...along with manners ... something else that costs nothing.

Went to a show yesterday and was watcing out 3yr old in a sports/hunter horse class. In comes - LATE - a girl with her unplaited horse, it had a bridle on with a headcollar over the top and a purple leadrope. She had her shirt half buttoned up and her tie around her bare neck. It really isnt that difficult to button your shirt to the top and tie you tie properly is it?!! Or at least attempt to plait your horse...

Does that class me as old? lol ;D Not in the slightest! 40 isn't old but it is a bit ott to be wearing that outfit to anything other than a fun night out or a fancy dress party - not really appropriate for the show ring - especially a Royal show!
