I have just been scammed on ebay to the tune of £2500......Allegedly bought a trailer via an ebay secure centre invoice - fake fake fake buyers beware of responding to anything "outside of ebay" which includes personal email addresses" from an ebay seller link ebay do not want to know and the police naturally take time...I am gutted 2 years to save - no trailer. In perspective I still have my health, family and beloved horse. If I can prevent anyone else being victimised by this fraudulent professional scam, and saving hard earned cash - happy to help.

So sorry xxx
Ebay does warn you not to deal with sellers through e-mails.
I only ever buy through paypal so that I am protected.
I really hope you can sort this and get your money back xx

Yes the trailer was advertised on ebay, the "seller" was unable to do a buiy it now on the listing, so sent me a secure centre invoice via ebay. Only as it has transpires was not through ebay as there was not a copy of said invoice in my ebay account inbox. The instructions were to pay (not via paypal) but through bacs to ebay sellers holding account which was then automatically locked by ebay for 90 days in the event of a refund - hmmm thought my bases were covered. Police are involved - relatively hopeful but naturally will take time...if the account traces to a person that is? Defo anyone must pay through paypal - I was just under the impression that secure centre invoices give you the same degree of protection as paypal, which maybe the genuine ones do. Thank you for all your kind words. Fingers crossed x

disgusting.
Don't be so quick to promote the 'safety' of paypal though. I paid £90 via paypal for some items from a seller in essex. i thought I was safe as I'd paid by paypal. package arrived with items missing. packaging poor but not damaged. I contacted seller but no response so raised a claim through ebay/paypal. The seller put a false recorded delivery number into the dispute and paypal accepted this as eveidence if posting. The item was sent standard second class not even signed for. I had kept the packaging and could prove it as had sellers name/address on it.
Paypal closed dispute and there is no course for appeal. So basically anyone on ebay or elsewhere can send something, put a fake 'recorded delivery number' into dispute and they will just close it. Not quite so safe after all.
Ok only £90 which compared to you is nothing.
I hope you can get it sorted out.
Trekking round to people's houses and paying in cash is the only way!

They tried exactly the same thing on us with an agricultural trailer. Luckily we googled this secure invoice thing and found it was a scam.
They are also doing it on horsewalkers. Saying the walker is in the upper most part of Scotland and assuming you won't go and look. I say "no prob I'll be there tomorrow, can I have your name, address & number" Then they disappear off the face of the earth!

I got scammed with my camera on ebay they used to email me pretending to be ebay so I would send passwords and details over and used to say they had received no money so I would send more money over turned out they wanted me to send it to Nigeria instead of America, ended up getting £600 off me. Makes you feel stupid!! Hope they get caught!

Mine came off my credit card, credit card company turned it over to paypal - paypal said it had been sent and delivered. It is true I had a package delivered (not recorded delivery though so actually seller had no proof of sending or delivery) but the package was minus the expensive items included. I think this is a deliberate scam and one very hard to prove/disprove. i have no doubt these people are still operating and doing the same to others.

I have bought two horseboxes via ebay, but paid cash on collection for both. I later sold one of them on ebay but had a problem with the winning bidder, who never made contact. I checked out his address (which wasn't visible of course until the auction ended). The address was something like "The Land, Liverpool" Yeah right The telephone number wasn't valid and the postcode didn't exist. It was a new ebay account, which looked as though it was set up purely to try to wreck the auction. I had to go through the PayPal dispute process to reclaim my selling fees, but didn't lose out as the second place bidder contacted me as soon as the auction ended and offered to buy the van if the winning bidder failed to make contact or the sale didn't go through for any reason. He paid a deposit by PayPal as soon as I was able to relist the box for him, then paid the rest in cash on collection. There are some idiots out there And also plenty of people who would take your cash at the first opportunity

If you paid via BACS the police should be able to trace the recipient of the cash very easily through the banking system. And if they can't then the Bank that opened the account will be in trouble for opening an account for someone without conducting suitable checks. It may depend how far the police go with it.

We had a problem with a saddle bought advertised on ebay then we paid and bought it privately...the seller there was from Southport Merseyside. The police were brilliant and finally 36 days after paying and getting no saddle we got a full refund after police involvement. Probably totally unconnected but if I can helpin anyway please contact me if the area is anywhere near here. Very sorry to hear this has happened to you and I hope so much you have a good outcome.
