I have attended Appleby Fair and have witnessed some dispicable scenes. However most of theses are committed br drunk young thugs who have no thought for themselves of others or the HORSES. Proper Romany Travellers look after their horses and treat them with respect and these idolts are giving them a bad name, when people already have made up their own minds that all travvellers are wicked. It is not the case. The RSPCA and the Appleby Fair Committee have been saying for years that they were going to put in a concrete ramp so that the ledge wasnt so steep, which still has yet to be done. The authorities and the RSPCA are to scared to get involved.

Appleby is a rough old place, we used to go and buy and sell a few ponies there ( no we're not [word deleted] but used to have a few driving ponies and pacers), but were always out before dark, they are very rough with their animals and always wanted to flash ours because I did'nt trot them fast enough on the tarmac. this is the second year running a horse has died there and it really surprises me that the village continues to hold this fair. And as for the RSPCA if they were there monitoring the washing, why did they not act? What is their actual point in existing if when something happens in their presence they allow it to go on?

I cant remember all the details, but it was a mare that was being flashed with I think a cart on, continually, she went down, broke her pelvis and was stripped and left. Someone else may be able to remember exactly, seem to remember reading about it in H&H.

i went to appleby on saturday. it was so hot horses teathered to tree mares with foal, no food or water. i saw a 2 year old which need a good feed and some love, asked how much he would sell it to me for ..... £15,000 !! total arses. if their going to keep them bloody look after them. its one big pee up and everyone forgets about the animals. its distresing not a day out. needs banning or done in the correct fashion. the police dont even shut the roads off whilst they race the trotters. no wonder they get knocked over. the BHS would have a field day ! if you get locked up for mis treating a dog that idiot who drowned a horse should. but there all gypsies and the police cant trace them. ... feel better thats out of my system. thankyou !

Please think about the words you are using and do not use racially offensive language. While there is no problem talking about the tragic event at Appleby, it is not acceptable to stereotype people based on their chosen lifestyle.

It is high time that ALL horse fairs were stopped, Appleby,Stowe,Watton and Usk to name but a few. I think too that horse theft would decrease if these fairs were banned there are always a spate of thefts before these sales. This is the 21st century not the middle ages and I sincerely hope that the dispicable knob who was responsable for this horses death meets the same end, break his legs first and then drown him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry for swearing but I am ssssoooooooooooooo angry.

Hi everyone
We were at Appleby from Thursday through to Sunday night. My partner is a farrier so we went up there for a few days shoeing. We heard about the filly drowning on the Friday, in the local paper the next day a photographer had caught the pony drowning on camera and the photographs were in the local paper along with the story which was headlining the front page.
Oh whole everyone did business with were fine, no problem, and all the customers we spoke to about the drowning were totally disgusted at what had happened. I think only TWO of the ponies he actually shod were shod by a qualified farrier, the rest had either been shod by the owner or a friend of a friend..
Pimms, £15k was cheap.. ponies we saw were going for £30 - £40k, with a coloured stallion priced up at £100k... I am totally bermused how they come up with such prices?? On the saturday a big gyspy dealer turned up in a huge livestock wagon, he let off 75 coloured ponies in the middle of appleby to be sold, all halterless, you had to see it to believe it !

UNFAIR - HOW CAN YOU SAY SUCH THINGS TO ARMARDA? ? I grew up riding for a dealer and went to all the sales and fairs. We bought and sold ponies from all the sales and fairs - we got good ones and bad ones. This does not make us bad people - it was called making a living. I think what happened with the horse that drowned was sick, I was very upset at the pictures. But did anyone actually go in the river and try to stop this lad or was it just shouting from bystanders? If thats the case then the people who stood and watched and took photo's really are as bad as he was. I am sure he will be hung drawn and quartered by his own.

Heart breaking, i have just sat and , I am not so sure he will be hung drawn and quartered by his own, but he will certainly be hung drawn and quartered by others, especially the old school gypsies. A friend of mine goes every year, he is half gypsy, he would never sell anything living there but has bought some fine horses back. I wanted to go just out of curiosity one year, being very naive. My friend was mortified and said it would scarr me for life, and I was never to go, he said the problem is not with the old school but with new pykies coming on the scene with little or no knowledge, just in the game to steal and make a penny or too. He said this strain of people were hated with venom by the old school and this caused a lot of trouble. I know if my friend had been watching he would have been the first one in the water to try to help the filly. No doubts there What a waste lets just hope lessons are learned from it

I am sickened by this incident i dont care who i offend when i say i have NEVER seen a gypsy, traveller whatever you choose to call them be anything but rough with their animals, now i am the first to admit i despise any kind of cruelty and am way too soft with my ponies but whenever i see these people they are mistreating these poor creatures i fill up every time i see them they are trotting them at 100 miles per hour on the roads the ponies are always in poor condition dripping with sweat and have the whites of their eyes showing. We have a permenant camp in the vicinity and i would shoot my own ponies before let these people have them

ANGRY how can you tar all travellers with the same brush?
Its outrageous to state such a thing, how do you know just by driving past or by having a site near you that they are proper romanies or not.
most of the old school romanies have been run off their sites or are offered so much money that they have no choice but to leave.
They can sell these ponies and buy them for that amount of money because alot of their money is illegal and couldnt go through the bank so that is the only way they can clean it up.

this is disgusting and cruel!! the travellers travel up the road which i take to go to work.. settle to sedbergh and last yr a horse was hit by a car just by devils bridge the gypsy left it by the busy road with a tea towel over its head to die! no rspca or ilph was called and the man got a way with this! the amount of stress these gypsy horses go through is tremendous! and now in the 21st century where theres busy cars, hooligan townies who kno nothing about horses ... travelling up in caravans and trailers! fairs like this should be stopped .. i kno its tradition but the way it used to work is nothing like it does today... its a disgrace!
