I am a community First Responder in our area for the Ambulance service and work on a respond when available basis ,and as I work from home on the yard, Its almost full time. Today I was called to a local lady whose horse had spooked and spun whilst being mounted which resulted in a tread injury - a multiple fracture of the Tib and Fib, a lift in the air ambulance, surgery and a very long recovery period. What Im getting at was that the A and E consultant said it was lucky that she wore her long leather boots and not half chaps as she would also no doubt have received major flesh injuries as well fron her calf being mashed under a shod foot, There by the Grace of God go a lot of us as we don our half chaps daily for exercising.

It's almost as if people think they are proving their ability but to me it's the opposite. I know some of the most talented horse people and they would not dream of riding without a hat as they know how dangerous and stupid it is! You can have the safest horse but for the sake of putting on a hat, you could save your life!

What makes me mad is seeing riders out on roads without a hat (often the chosen substitute is a baseball cap!).
How can we expect car drivers to respect horses and riders if the riders themselves show no respect for their bodies?

My 'orange box' is riding without a hat. Every day I pass a a very smart yard while on the way to my ponies, the owner produces event horses, gives lessons in most disciplines AND regularly holds PC rallies, at which she is the instructor. Great, but every time when I pass by and she is in the school on one of the horses, she is never wearing a hat! Which is not an example to lead by, Some years ago my daughter was kicked in the head by a pony, she was not wearing a hat, she suffered a fractured skull, was in intensive care for 10 days, it left her with some minor brain damage, which does effect her ability to cope with some situations. Although my daughter does lead a very normal life, things have been difficult for all of us. Not wearing a hat, is not cool, it is plain stupid!
