I think you need to be VERY careful casting aspertions about which ponies may or may not be doped. Just because it has its 'bits' out doesnt mean you can be sure it has had something illegal.
I've had my suspicions about horses before but would never come on here and name them!! If any of us are that worried we ought to be brave enough to put our money down and object to the organisers/society concerned.

Surely the societies are partially to blame for the increase in doping. If they were to test much more often then people would be less willing to take the risk. I think the other problem is money. If someone pays a small fortune for a pony they want to win at any cost. This means that the pony has to have loads of food and do loads of work to get it the right shape. It may well then not be in the right frame of mind for a lr or fr class. So it gets doped or worked loads more, or both - because it must win to justify the huge price paid for it. Thank God we bred our ponies and love them to bits and it really does not matter if they do not win.

I think it is harsh to lay blame with the societies. Dope testing is hugely expensive and unless like in Oz and other countries exhibitors pay extra (again!) into a special dope testing fund I cannot see them being able to take more than a couple a year.

I heard they were dope testing at the royal too, one from each class! Be interesting to see how many producers are there as seemed to be a lack of them at East Of England in the show ponies, i wonder why? Surely this will be very costly wonder who will foot the bill?

Well, it will make the classes interesting viewing if it is known that they are dope testing one from each class! I bet the cost of the testing will get passed onto the competitors one way or another, maybe they are reviewing everyones entries to pay for them LOL!
As everyone seems to think it is only the producers who dope their ponies, I wonder how many will turn up now! At least I know mine are ok!

i am aware of the goings on in showing and doping. i feel its wrong because you are not winning on your own merit and hard work you are winning on the supressed angsiety (sp) of the pony who inside its poor mind is probly going crazy from the amount of drug running through its system. i have a show pony that was on a producers yard some years ago and he has be pumped full of so many different things he shajes when having injections off the vet and runs away when you try and worm him, now to my knowledge i know that he was fed 4 tubes per show so no wonder hes gets in such a state.
does anybody remember the incident at myerscough a few years back in the 14.2 sp RIHS qual class 4 of the same producers ponies flipped all at the same time? and then had to leave the ring after one getting cast against the wall? very scary possibly the result of an bad reaction.

Hmm I COMPLETLEY agree that far too many ponies are doped. However if they bring in lots of testing then people are just going to find other ways to get their horses to behave. I' imagine even more lunging for hours on end, tying ponies up all night and not giving horses water for days before a show. As much as I don't like seeing doped horses; I would rather that than other inhumane practices.
There's no easy answer is there!

Maybe a dope test levy is the way forward. It would soon become acceptable. Perhaps the new Showing forum could introduce this across the board.
