The ride judge in the coloured horse class gave some of the most bizarre marks ever. The winner (gee Lynn Russell's surprise surprise) cavorted in the go round, barged about in the line-up, kicked James Van Praag's horse both barrels and gave an average ride. Ms Russell decided the rules about showing jackets don't apply to her, wore a waxy looking one, told Nigel Hollings (conf judge) when he questioned this that 'he should be judging the horse, not her' and shouted at other competitors to move their horses after hers had kicked another competitors. Why was Ascoteer not sent out for this? Disgraceful, really disgraceful. Some genuinely nice horses were left out, including last year's RIHS winner, and while Endeavour and Jane Webber's went beautifully, there were others that did too, and got decent conf marks but were absolutely shafted on ride marks. What a waste of entry money, diesel and time

I may not be the biggest LR fan out there and I wasn't at the show so can make no comment on her horse's manners or going but I would like to say one thing. Regarding her rather unusual attire in the ring - has anyone bothered to ask why she is doing this, before making assumptions that she is just flaunting her disregard for the sport? It isn't my place speculate as to another person's private business on a public forum, but I am simply pointing out that there is usually a reason behind such decisions and, more importantly, a reason as to why stewards/judges are allowing it.
Please take care with your assumptions, anonymous or not.

I thought the judging of the 13 hd show hunter class was outrageous the pony that won did at least 6 wrong legs 3 or 4 attempst on the first rein and did not manage it then changed rein and another 3 attempts before it got it i t should not have been in the placings no matter how much they liked it. Sally Fluck should be struck off for allowing that pony to win her show mark should have been so low it could not get placed and the BSPS need to sort her out people need to complain about this now as she will lose her star over this if enough people complain. I thought the judging of the show ponies and SRT was straight no favours going on but if they liked something it was having top marks unless it did something serious also very dissapointed that the first 3 pulled in the smalls were 14-2s and the winner is a lovely pony but never a small intermediate. If you contact the Head office in writing, i can guarantee it will be taken seriously and in confidence. thanks..

Agree with the point about the 'small intermediate'. It is a 14.2hh and the girl riding it looked very young. Whats the point of intermediate classes if kids on 14.2's take the tickets!!!

haha i am in total agreement with the above but this discussion is always the same and 14.2's still go and win. For me on the day it didnt do a hoys winning show and there were some more 'int' types down the line but i guess if you really liked it it did nothing wrong to take the ticket. I think she can't of liked htem to go on as the ones that went on and galloped seemed to move down the line! Also again why were they asked to do a sp show, its an intermediate class!

i too was v.confused with the show pony show given to the intermediates.... most intermediates such as gentle breeze and a few others really shine when doing rein back, walk to canter etc. intermediates is a step up from show ponies and for the judge to giv a little show pony show there was no room for them to impress! the fact that east of england is such a big county show the horses entered should be required by the judge to do a fancy show! at midland counties the judges gave a piece of paper to the jockeys i felt this was v.good ;) particulary gentle breeze walked that class at MC due to incorporating 'fancy' things!
the smalls is a horrible class sooooo many n over half are 14.2s!
i felt genlte breeze looke peeed off! it was being worked for hours.. the buck looked like a get lost kind of attitude
wish all the best to them at rihs ... looks fab n when goes fab there is nothing to touch it!
xxxx :P

the young girl riding the 14-2 looked about 12 it is truely making a mockery of the small class, but i disagree that gentle breeze is head and shoulders above anything else i much prefered the winner and there are some good horses in that class also i have yet to see it go really well. I do agree that the intermediates need to perform and the first 2 in the large class went terrible and should not have been placed.

I agree with the small SRT, I watched this class, and was utterly gobsmacked at the outcome. The winner, yes is a lovely pony, but it certainly did NOT do a show worthy of a HOYS qualification, Nobody clapped by the ring at the outcome, nor did they clap on the lap of honour. Stoney Silence.
It made a mockery of the whole concept of Intermediate Show Riding Type classes. God Help us all.

east of eng when you say you agree with the small show riding type you mean you agree it should not have won. Also what baffled me was if the judges loved the pony so much why did they not have it top in its own class very strange i thought the winner of the 14-2 class was a different type alltogether. Another bug bear for me is some 14-2s have got 4 classes at the RIHS open 14-2s pretty polly 14-2s small int and part bred arabs talk about getting your monies worth, and i will be surprized if more than half the tickets to HOYS will be the 14-2s up to now. what has qualified i think up to now they are all 14-2s. can some one give us a list

Please advise, I agree whole heartedly that the small intermediate class should be just that small intermediates. I think the problem lies with the ruling of the class, " exceeding 146 cms and not exceeding 153 cms" I do know that the BSPS has got this ruling under review (if you check their website) it clearly states that they are debating the ruling on the intermediates.
Until this ruling is changed to read EXCEEDING 148 cms and not exceeding 153 cms, this problem will constantly rear its ugly head.
And Yes, I did not think that the winning pony should of Won that HOYS small intermediate class, it was clearly NOT A HOYS QUALIFYING PERFORMANCE.

Ms Russell's reason for not wearing her showing jacket was that 'I'm judging tomorrow' - so presumably she was worrying about getting it wet, altho perhaps that was a reminder to all present, judges included, that she stands both sides of the fence and remembers who does her favours. Or not.
We could all wear waterproof jackets for fear of a dousing.
Frankly, it was the kicking incident that was worst, and the blatant unfairness of the ride marks. Showing at this level is horrendously expensive and while I totally agree that 'you pay your money and take your chance', this type of thing makes my blood boil.
As for contacting CHAPS to complain, I wouldn't waste my time. Might as well bash your head on a brick wall

Or not. I'm surprised that someone in her position doesn't have more than one jacket. Are you saying she didn't even have a hacking jacket on, but one of those waxy overcoats? And to think some showing people turn their noses up at blue tweeds.....wonder what would happen if we all wore wax jackets instead?

She wore her waterproofs also at Bath. I thought it was ridiculous, after all she is an adult, not a small child competing in a lead-rein class.

Lead rein and Fr, come to think of it all the children ride in all weathers day after day, they manage, saturdays and sundays sometimes, and their mothers manage to dry jackets, that was a pathetic excuse sorry,,,,

Yes, it was a short, pale brown waxy looking jacket with little dark collar - a bit of a bum freezer actually You'd think people in these classes are children playing musical chairs the way they dash in to get lined up, jostling and squeezing. No wonder something got kicked. I did wonder if perhaps the jacket was part of her new showing range and she's giving it some free publicity, as I'm sure she's guaranteed to get her picture is H&H

And were you the judge or the judge's steward in that class, Solarina? If not, then I am not sure how you would have been in a position to so accurately hear what, if any, reason Ms Russell gave for her attire; and if you were and you felt so strongly - why did you, as a judge/steward allow her to continue if her attire was incorrect and so offensive to your sensibilities?

Post by solarina on Jun 18, 2007 23:17:12 GMT
You didnt have to be a judge or steward to hear her telling other competitors to move, or to hear her tell Nigel Hollings about the jacket, as he was stood so close the the line-up, as anyone could tell you. Ms Russell hardly keeps her voice down.
And, as I have already said, it was the kicking incident and the bizarre ride marks that upset people - and not just me, I can assure you. One competitor was apparently snapped at for daring to yawn while the line re-shuffling went on.
Either you have rules about correct attire, or you don't. It wasn't even raining when the class went in. It has nothing to do with "offending my sensibilities" and everything to do with maintaining standards of dress.
It all sends out the worst possible message to amateurs.

i completely disagree with 'please advise' even thou there are lovely horses in the large intermediates i feel gentle breeze is just the 'bees knees' at 1b it did a fab show n apart from e of e it has always done what the judges have required! its very glamourous and really eyecatching it is definately a cut above the others!

Sally i disagree with you gentle breeze is a lovely moving quality int BUT it has a very obvious roach back and i have NEVER seen it go fantasticl this season i am sorry but at 1b it just did a very basic show i was there and there were better shows on the day.

If 14.2 are allowed in intermediates then why the hell shouldn't they be in it?? You don't whinge about a 144 showhunter in the 15handers so whats the difference? As for 'if the judges loved the pony so much why did they not have it top in its own class' Harlaw was not in the 148cm show pony class so they would have struggled to pull him top!! Mind you if the poor girl who has him (who rides him very well regardless of her age) had decided to take him in to the 148cm show pony class as well chances are if the treatment the murrays recieved from you lot for taking there 148 in more then one class earlier in the season you would still have moaned. I would also like to add that the winner did exactly the same show as all the rest and it was foot perfect!! IT NOT THE COMPETITORS FAULT THE JUDGE ASKED FR A SHOW PONY SHOW! Finally as for RIHS the 148cm show pony classes is no different to 138 doing the sp, pp, pba and then doubling up as showh unter as many do! I think your all just sad, jealous individuals who perhaps if you spent less time whinging on her and beside the ring and more time producing your own ponies to perfection that harlaw and others are produced to you might also get to hoys one day.

Regarding LRs jacket. I believe there is a picture in H&H of her wearing the offending garment, plus navy waterproof trousers in the cob championship somewhere. Last Thursday's edition.

Let's have a whip round to buy Ms. Russell another jacket! The one she wears looks like an Oxfam cast off anyway.......and as for the waterproof get up, are we in India in the Monsoon Season? NO. So WHY does etiquette, manners and respect for the judge and your fellow competitiors not apply to her? Fair play to NH for standing up to her - I bet he didn't expect to be answered back though! Whatever a Judge says to you, you take it on the chin whether you agree with it or not. Manners maketh Man (or Woman) and this woman is a law unto herself. And as for getting away with her horse kicking someone else's - surely HORSE manners come into the final placings too?

I believe LR has been quoted as saying that she is waiting for Annie Blaker to give up, so she can have her coat. Perhaps the time has come for Annie to do the decent thing and let LR have her coat.

Ah thats not to say that I wish Annie Blaker would give up, I for one enjoy watching her ride her small hunter and personally feel it was a sad day when she gave up sidesaddle. She always has a smile on her face.

i saw LR in mentioned jacket in H&H and assumed that she was warming up at the time and that the writing underneath picture was wrong. How many of us have stood in the rain with our LR's and FR's wishing they could wear a jacket and they are only tiny, perhaps we should all try this. But hey we'd probably get kicked out
