No, I joined one year in order to register two Welsh ponies. It cost me more than it had for breed registration with no real benefit at all. Only needed to compete in affiliated classes so at an annual membership it makes it a very expensive show.

No. I did it and total waste of money. Judging is very dodgy too more like longest mane and tail competitions. Conformation and manners don't count for much.

Its a silky mane and tail competition and they prefer the PBA's every time. Complete waste of money when you have a beautiful filly, very correct etc and will stand down the line to something with legs screwed on wrong just because you have too many dapples or a too thick mane

The palomino classes are judged purely on colour (except for the ridden classes). So unfortunately a horse with poor conformation but perfect colour would be placed above those with good conformation but poor colour. A good palomino should have a coat which is the colour of "a newly minted coin" and a pure white mane and tail with no black hairs. The coat shouldn't be dappled or "smutty" (dark bits - often in between the back legs and lower parts of the legs). It's very very difficult to get a native with clear colour, and often as they get older they get darker and smuttier, that's why the PBAs are often placed higher because there colour is often clearer.
Some judges do take into account manners, conformation etc but often this will only happen when the horses have similar colour. Each judge does have their own preference, some like a very pale gold and others prefer them much darker, some take more than colour into account, others don't.
That said, it's a very friendly society, and if your doing the county shows it's nice to be able to do more than just your one breed class! If your in wales there are lots and lots of palomino shows, but not many anywhere else! The midland show is lovely and the cups, trophies and rosettes are stunning.
Looking at the photo of your D i would say he is quite smutty up his legs so inhand he would probably be placed about half way down the line in most classes. However he would probably do quite well ridden as the marking is slightly different and way of going is taken into account.
(Also some things can "enhance" or ruin colour! If you have something that is quite dark you can leave them out in the sun which naturally bleaches them lighter, or if they are light, then keep them out of the sun. Molasses are also said to darken the coat and sometimes makes them smutty.)

I registered my section D with the palomino society and I've not had any success stood bottom every time shown (in hand, I've not tried ridden.) The first time the judge put all the pba's first and the second said he still had some winter coat so couldn't place him higher. The person who inspected him loved his colour but most judges find him too dark, ironic when the last palomino I owned the judges said was too light.
It's put me off competing in their classes again especially in hand, perhaps I'll try the ridden classes one day but it was quite a disheartening experience especially when my pony was so well behaved and others weren't so.

In affiliated in hand classes palominos are judged 60% colour and 40% movement and conformation,in ridden classes they are judged as a riding horse/pony.Sadly many shows have dropped the classes, but the National Championships are back at Malvern next year

What are peoples thoughts on our boy? I know he has his rug on but the colour on his neck is generally his natural colour (He lightens slightly over the winter) He's a Sec D with 4 even white socks and a blaze. We've only has him since May but he does well in the Palomino classes x

He's only been backed for 6 months and has only lightly been shown this year. We're hoping to do the bigger shows in 2012 with him but dont want to rush - He's only 5 and has the rest of his life to show x Does anyone recommend any good Palomino classes to do with him in 2012? Attached is a better picture of his coat colour
