Is it just me, or were there fewer people at the Northern this year, and do you think it was lacking in atmosphere and good organisation, apparantly they had to hold the start up 30 mins, why....

The show was held up by 30 mins but only to help competitors who were stuck on the way into the show because of the rain. Northern Horse Show is still one of the best shows in the north and the only reasons some classes are lacking is because there are so many to choose from which is a good thing

That & the fact the schedule came out so late which was a deciding factor for me even though I have been for years. Didn't know who the judges would be & other shows' entries were closing so had to make a decision. Great show usually though!

i think it was very badly organised, we had a cob and our class was delayed for over three hours because they waited for int srt to finish before staring hacks. the timetable clearly stated both were on at the same time so competitiors should have just entered the one class. it wasn't like they didn't know they would clash till the last minute. also there was an announcement made over the tanoy @ 2:45 stating the cobs had changed ring and judge and would be starting at 3, but then no one would admit to saying it and we must have imagined it, along with all the other people stood at the commentary box wondering what was going on

The entries in the Olympias were poor compared to others this year and I think the NPS should keep an eye out, as this is the way they could be moved round the country. Perhaps to other NPS Areas, whom I think should always be given the qualifiers first.
Now there is a level, NPS can keep records of how many at each show.

The show was held up due to some "not so good driver" letting there lorry go of the track into showground and having to be towed in......i was queing for over half an hour to get in.... As for the organisation..times are only a guide line NOT set times.....we all moan and groan about said shows being this and that...BUT.....i would like to say a BIG thankyou to all of those people who helped to put on this show...without these sort of people..there would be NO shows!!!

Just wish they could organise the parking and rings differently. It always seems miles to walk to get to the rings and you can never see or hear what is going on with the classes

Where abouts do you suggest they move this qualifier to increase the entries? There are less and less qualifiers in the "north" so I hope they manage to hold onto it at this show.

David Hinde here. As Organiser of the show I take on-board peoples positive comments and do try and improve the show where possible for the benefit of the exhibitors etc. This year was the first year that " Not before" starting times were put on every section. This was done after many requests but with trepidation as I knew that there was the chance that exhibitors would mis read the times as actual starting times- the not before times were done for the exhibitors benefit and I can see from the postings on this website (and comments on the day) it seems to show a misunderstanding of the concept of how they work. To clarify a few other points that have been mentioned on this site: The 07 Olympia classes: we had some 35 more entries than in 06. The NPS do monitor the nos in all nps qualifiers and this is taken into account when qualifiers are distributed/allocated. The going on the well drained permanent pasture ancient sward was perfect at the start of the day- the rain coming later during the day was fairly predictable and did make the going then soft in a couple of the 12 rings. The half an hour delay in starting- this was caused by 1 horsebox coming off the hard core access route and this caused a huge backlog as this one box could not be readily accessed by the tractors that were on standby on the show ground. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the judges, stewards and exhibitors that took this delay in good grace and the show tried throughout the day to make up this lost time and by the end of the day succeeded. I understand peoples comments re clashing classes etc. This cannot be avoided with the number of classes that are put on. This show has tried to encourage minority classes as well as main stream ones and does hold classes that many other shows do not. I am under increasing pressure from other Committee & Team members to downsize the show and reduce the number of rings but this does go against my aim, however if these sections are not supported then I do not have the ammunition to resist this move. Ring layout and PA. When I took over the site on Monday afternoon to start laying out the field I found to my surprise that the left hand side of the park was not usable as it still had sheep on- this has never happened before and anyone using such parkland sites that rely on goodwill know that it is easy to stamp ones feet and then find that they do not have a venue for the following year. This posed a logistical problem as the layout had been rolled out to exhibitors and to the PA company with their numbers etc. We tried to cope with this situation as best as we could and I fully agree that it was not ideal. It is hoped that in 2008 we will be able to re-locate the whole layout to the right hand side of the banking which will hopefully make exhibitor access to the rings etc easier. The schedule. The schedule was out 3 weeks before the 1st closing date BUT the judges and timetable were on the website a long time before this. The entries secretary did her utmost to help as many people as possible with their problems and self made mistakes. I will endeavor in 2008 to make sure that the schedule is out earlier. It is easy to read the comments on this site and wonder why show organisers and helpers do bother - I realised a long time ago that it is not possible to please everyone all of the time. I have received about 25 letters and messages thanking the team for their hard work for the 07 show and this is about as many postings on this site. Should anyone have any issues that they wish to discuss or suggestions to make to improve the 2008 show then please e-mail me direct on dchinde@aol.com I will finish by saying a huge thank you to the RDA helpers, Laurie and the 4 set up crew (including me), the sponsors, the team of 45 stewards, the judges, the team of 20 in the hospitality and site cleaning, the 2 co-show directors, Jane Burnell (the entries secretary), the 2 tractor drivers and 6 assistants who most ably without too much damage pulled nearly every vehicle off the showground etc etc. Probably in excess of 100 people gladly give up their time, excluding the judges, to help with this show. I think it is easy to forget the wider picture sometimes and we were concerned before the weekend that the exceptional weather conditions were going to make the show not possible BUT this did not happen and the morning was bright and dry. However what then happened over the ensuing 24 hours with a months rainfall in less than 24 hours, with 4 of the 12 rings then under a foot of water hopefully puts a few of the comments on this site into perspective -always mindful, of course, of the mass destruction and damage that has been caused to homes, livelihoods etc in many areas of the Country in "The Real World". Heres looking to the 2008 show

Well said David. We went and enjoyed the show and thought the workers course was one of the better ones we have seen with perfect going and a lovely large ring. By the way we didn't win.

Dear David
As a new secretary and after biting my tongue at comments about our show on here, i have started to post just the facts and not enter into squabbles ( an thats quite hard as i take pride in what i do and hard to see people being horrid!) , as i found it very draining, I know how hard it is to run a show and yours is bigger than ours, dont let the small minded few PARTICULARLY the ones who post horrid comments anonymously get you down, i think alot of people have no idea just what goes into the organisation of shows and that it really makes you wonder is it all worth it, my answer now mine is over with is YES it is worth it, as there will always be the plesent competitors more so than the disgruntled few, in this game there is never 100% pleasing all and thats part of the showing game,
Keep Smiling
Emma

We were held up for almost an hour to get in but by the look of the track and the tyre marks etc it looked like someone had tried to avoid the large overhanging branches on a particular tree over the track, understandably i suppose too when you see the size f some of those lorries and their paint work! It was our first time there and others did comment that they too had never known it only be held on one side of the park but also that the exit route had also been used as access before so maybe thats something that could be re instated? All in all though we had a very enjoyable show and would definately go again

We had a lovely time as always I found the show organisers and the helpers very very helpful..it was quite a walk to the rings, but you soon get over it. There are very few shows that put on such a wide range of classes for all, I for one hope that David does not bow to pressure from others and reduce the show as it is quite unique in its size for a one day. So thank you David Hinde, Jane Burnell and all others involved.

This is one of my favourite shows and was again this year. As for the walk to the rings. Surely if pony and handler are fit enough to show, a bit extra walking would be of no consequence. Even when you had to change ponies for following classes the judge and steward were very obliging and gave a little extra time for the extra distance.

Fab show dispite the weather and short delay... I for one will most def. go next year..and many thanks to Mr hinde and his team of workhorses for all their hard work . Like in an earlier post, without these people that give up their free time and efforts..there would be no shows....so think again all you moaners...

We went to Northern Horse some years back and were put off by the walking!
However, got there a bit earlier this time and realised that if you went to the far side, you could virtually see the rings! Everyone seemed to piled along the track, which looked rather amusing if you looked from the bottom of the hill!
There was hardly anyone down our end even tho it was the best spot! And no- we didn't get stuck. Ground was better than the track side.
I thought it was a great show all things considered. My only comment would be the hold up for us at the gate seemed to be the purchasing of catalogues. Think that could have been speeded up but hey- quite nice not to be over engineered at times!
