we were totally disgusted at this years royal to find the chief horse steward competing in classes. along with another steward. does anyone else think that this should not be allowed?

why not? If you stop the stewards competing, then I think you will find a lot of shows are rather short of stewards. Personally, I don't steward and compete at the same show, but that's my choice and not something I would push on others.
Latest NPS newsletter was encouraging those competing at the summer champs to consider stewarding.

Why should someone that gives up there free time and helps out be penalized? very differcult to run shows without the help of a good steward.

The chief steward gives up an amazing amount of her time to all aspects of showing from mare grading to aranging shows year in year out and as said already shows would not function if these kind folk did not give up their time free of charge. We could have of course paid stewards who would like to arrange that it would be a nightmare and all entry fee would rocket.

Well i don't usually have the time to show and steward at our shows but I have done in the past - try not to be stewarding for the judge i will be under but sometimes if we have hardly any stewards it has happened and of course it is likely that at some point i will be stewarding for a judge who may then judge my pony at another show - I do always try and leave the ring if my own pony is competing in the class but if its impossible make sure the judge does not know its my pony - sadly with a shortage of stewards for most shows its a real juggling act as most people also want to show and that is why they ended up stewarding in the first place

i only think that it isn't fair that someone who can be rubbing shoulders with judges one minute can then be in a class under them

I think that this is a bit of a sore subject, I do quite a bit of stewarding, although I have never shown at the same time, I would happily do this and I think if you have good honest judges I don't think it makes any difference, However I can see your point of view. If shows made that rule though, there would probably be a lot less stewards and they are hard enough to find as it is and they are usually a good small bunch of people that officiate a few shows and I think that the showing world would be alot worse off without them.

Dont tar all judges with the same brush, if a judge is bent, then they are bent, if they are straight, they are straight, just rubbing shoulders with the steward is not going to make a good judge place them, they are probably complete strangers to the judge anyway. These sort of comments are an insult to the good judges out there....
