Has anyone ever had fluid drained from any of their ponies limbs??
I have a pony with fluid lumps on the side of his hocks and i am toying with the idea of having them drained as they are letting him down in the ring.
Has anyonme ever had anything like this done before??

i have a pony with a half ping pony sized ball on knee due to trauma as a baby ( got stuck in haynet) advised not to drain as can cause infection and make things worse, i give mine a good massage before i o in the ring and it drains and fills back slowly, on a coloured place anyway so not hard to see unless you know what your looking for, hence my non logged in name

Ask your vet, i have had large windgalls drained and injected with steroid a very simple procedure done at my yard and it worked a treat, lasted over 6 months some vets do prefer to do it at the practise my vet says as long as the area is sterile and is keept clean for a couple of days risk is minimal.

My yearling has a small amount of excess fluid on her knee due to knocking the tendon. The vet is coming to see her again on thurs to see what can be done. Will see if he suggests drain or what. Will post result.

We had a horse have the same treatment but unfortunately our results were completey the opposite. They came back twice the size within 4 weeks

Be VERY CAREFUL having steriod injected for windgalls I lost my young successful hunter with Lamanitis the vet failed to tell us that it was quite a common side effect!!!!

Agree totally with Proudwilliam on the steroids. Drainage carries a Huge risk of infection and worse, generally the vet will want to clip a full limb to minimise this risk. Wingalls etc are as a result of trauma, albeit minimal trauma- once the fluid "pocket" is made, it generally always refills. Ultrasound works well, or damp teatowels sprinkled with epsom salts banaged on, and changed every 2 or 3 hours, for a couple of days before a show really helps too.
