a friend swapped a horse at Xmas for a ID mare, from a dealer down south, -- the horse has been slowly brought into work and conditioned and was rather ungainly to ride
She now has lost the use of her back legs and appears to be uncordinated behind. - she is due to go to the Veterinary Hospital for investigations Wednesday
The owner has photocopied the Passport for the Insurance Company and although not visible to the naked eye when photocopied there are several perforations on the descriptions page and on the right hand side there show the Code 'INVALID' we have checked on the internet and it says this is when an animal has been sent for slaughter,
The dealer had said this horse had been hunted in Ireland, yet when the current owner checked, she had been sold through Malvern sales last Autumn as an unbroken 5 yr old,
Obviously something amiss here, --- Vet coming to check the MIcro chip to see if this horse is who it says she is,
In all of this the poor horse needs to go and be investigated and got right -- Cant really Guess whats gone on yet. - but not looking good for Horse or Owner.
Does anybody know what all this means, Ironically this horse had her injections restarted and the vet never checked the micro chip against the passport
All information would be greatly appreciated, Thankyou

Such a shame for the poor horse and owners I would try DEFRA and National Equine database, see if they can give you any advice and the vet will probably be able to point you in the right direction with any other useful people you could contact. Let us know how she gets on at the veterinary hospital

Crikey - what a hassle.
The trouble with passports is that they are only any good if they are checked each time against the animal id. Passports are not 100% perfect with cattle, but are reasonably okay as the ear tag is easily checked against the passport. Tags can be changed, but on the whole they are reasonably easy to check. How many of us have a microchip reader - or how many of us have the animal vetted and ask the vet to fetch a microchip reader to read against the passport?
What a shame for your friend, I hope that she gets this resolved.

Thankyou will keep you posted on the developments. -- should be revealed tomorrow - the breeder has been contacted who says they bred to horses a month apart to the particular ID stallion, both grey mares -- all seems to be so disjointed everyone has a different story to tell, --- So much for passports eh? will keep you posted.

Trading standards is who you require - police will call it a civil matter I would imagine, however, trading standards may be building a case against these dealers. They will also be best able to advise your friend as to her rights as she will have rights due to having bought from a dealer, it is just enforcing them that becomes a problem! Lets hope mare is okay and your friend gets sorted. Contact Jebediah on here - she is absolutely red hot on the legalities of these things.
